Well I liked it!

Seconded. Ctrl-Alt-Del stopped being funny years ago, if it was ever. I think there was like one good joke, early on, and then it just got beat to the ground. And miscarried.

Great call-out. I have to visit the CAD forums now, just to see the fun.

No, he goes after them all. He just uses one example that a lot of his watchers will recognized because it’s been discussed so much lately that even those of us who shares his loathing of all things webcomicky knows the reference.

His singling out CAD doesn’t take you of the hook, Rimbo. Your taste still sucks.

Be nicer to me or I will post a Silent Kimbly comic in every thread you read! And if you don’t start liking me more I will REALLY flame you.

Don’t give in Hanzii! He’s going to do it anyway!

Also, ZP didn’t clarify its stance before Penny Arcade. He seemed to set them in a category of their own.

Well, in the Books/Comics/TV/Music thread linked above, there’s a link to his 'blog where he compares a CAD cartoon (as an example of the “wrong” way to do humor) and a PA cartoon with the same gag (as an example of the “right” way). So one would think he’s generally pro-PA, although the specific thing he mentions as being wrong with CAD has occurred in older PA comics as well.

I think that’s mostly because they are. Like them or hate them, to lump them in with other online gaming web comics is like lumping iPods in with all the other music players out there. There’s one that is a clear leader, is synonymous with the format, and partially got its success by being in the right place at the right time.

Which is not to say that other people may not put out superior products - they very well may - but they are always going to be in PA’s shadow. (until the next big thing.)

The one point where he explicitly put PA in a separate category was by excluding them from the set of people trying to imitate PA. Which makes a certain amount of sense. :>

The only webcomic he mentions by name is Penny Arcade, though he is clearly targeting CAD. In fact, I cannot think off the top of my head another “videogame” webcomic that fits the cliche he described (zany main character, straightman support, and female interest). This strikes me as a poor showing by Yahtzee. If you’re going after a specific webcomic, do it by name.

Wow, CAD took the forum dedicated to talking about the comic itself to require registration to view.

PvP Online.

Megatokyo, before it stopped being a gaming comic.

VG Cats?

There’s no straightman support in VG Cats.

Someone probably mentioned him sending pictures of his cock to 16 year old girls. It’s a real hot button trigger for that dude.

Explain?

Who’s the zany guy? Who’s the straight man?

PVP Online’s barely even a gamer comic anymore, really. It’s more of a fantasy workplace comic, with the occasional mention of games. Kurtz only bought a 360 last year and has neither a Wii, a PS3 or a computer used for gaming.

Also, PVP’s been around longer than PA.

Explanation!

Man, it’s been ages since I read PVP Online.

I’ll go with the edgy one in black as the zany guy, and the overweight manager type as the straight man. Or possibly the troll.

Oh, a non-gamer comic that fits the pattern: GPF. Fooker is the zany one, Nick is the straight man, and Ki is the hot wish-fulfillment chick. I think User Friendly might be another geek comic that fits, but I can’t even remember any of the character names at this point; did it have Wish Fulfillment Girl?

I don’t know if Yahtzee has encouraged or discouraged me to work on my own piece of trash. Maybe even Rimbo will like it. :) Hehe.

Main character that’s a thinly veiled version of myself: check.
Copy and paste art: check.

I don’t have a side kick or hot wish fulfillment chick though.

I might not like it, but is that really a bad thing given my taste? At least you know I’ll be willing to try. :)
