They Shall Not Grow Old

Just saw this. Worth a watch. Also has an interesting section where Jackson goes through the process of restoration, which is interesting in itself.

This is playing in the theaters in the German speaking world now (probably not by coincidence yesterday was the centennial of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles). It’s certainly worth a watch, but doesn’t really benefit from being shown on a big screen.

The section with original footage at the start went on too long, and I was quite surprised they then just cut to the restored versions in the blink of an eye. It seems like there would have been scope for a minute-long smooth transition in quality, where you don’t even notice it’s happening. And using cartoons as the illustrations when they talked about actual combat in trenches didn’t work for me at all.

But in general all aspects of the restoration was impressive, and I was surprised at how coherent the narrative ended up.
