Also, make sure it’s actually fruit flies you’re dealing with and not something like fungus gnats.

Oh. Hm… That could be.

While out touring an oyster farm on Saturday we were treated to stingray tacos. At least that’s what we were told. Sort of tasted like lobster.

Ovitraps have been shown to be effective by army studies. They work with or without pesticide (more effective with). The primary method is by making the mosquitoes lay eggs in a container, but the mesh prevents adult mosquitoes from getting out

UV traps DO NOT WORK for mosquitoes. I have several. The thing is mosquitoes are not attracted to UV. They are attracted to carbon dioxide. Baiting the traps with CO don’t really work as far as I can tell. You can put one of the zappers indoors and hope the mosquito just randomly wanders in there, normally it takes a few days. It is annoying.

UV traps are very good at catching moths.

For fruit flies any of the traps with water, soap, and plastic film work. Even just an open container with soapy sugary water works.

If it’s fungus gnats then for long-term elimination you’ll want to deal with the top layer of soil where they are reproducing. Easiest thing is to let the top couple inches really dry out, but I believe you can put a layer of stone or pebbles on top to prevent it too.

Short term sticky traps can help keep the numbers down. Traps sometimes help, but not to the same level as with fruit flies in my experience.

Will do. They’re mainly around my kumquat tree. I’ll skip a few waterings and let that really dry out on the surface.

If they really are fruit flies we just put out a bowl or two of vinegar where we see them. Usually around the sink, or of course near fruit.

Thanks! I mooched around on the internet and various forums for a while, and they seem to agree with you that:

I’m going to try this other option that I found, since I already have all the materials at hand:

We’re going wayyy off-topic here, but I can certainly chime in on mosquito control. Check out Thermacell Mosquito Repellents: Mosquito Control Solutions & Devices | Thermacell.

I have been using the Radius device for the past three summers to much success. Reviews are pretty consistent for a product like this as well. Refills can be pricey, but it’s better than getting all bitten up.

To bring it back around: Chicago or New York style mosquitos?

oh yeah those instructions look really good!

New York. While they can be bad, Chicago mosquitos are the size of bats.

Nah thats more Wisconsin.

Chicago mosquitos aren’t really mosquitos. They’re more of a lasagna.

I still can’t fully grok the skeeters in Minnesota. It’s like the ecosystem got special dispensation from God to ignore any natural limits on mosquito biomass.

Oh, so like a Chicago Pizza?

That’s the joke.gif

Also, that joke really makes me hungry.

This isn’t really the right thread for this, because I would totally eat this.

No, that sounds right for this thread. Remember, this thread has lots of examples of really unhealthy foods that might be delicious, but we really shouldn’t be eating.

I dunno, I’d try it. I’m pretty sure I’ve eaten worse at Salt and Straw.
