Thomas Jefferson on Slavery

The spirit of the master is abating.

I read that and cracked the fuck up. Jefferson just rose several notches in my esteem!

In an effort to make this more than just a hilarious masturbation reference from the 18th century: I’m currently reading Bound for Canaan (thanks Lorini!). Can someone give me some good recommendations on books regarding:

  • The Continental Congress. I’d like to know the nitty-gritty of all the politicking that went on there. Yeah yeah there are the Federalist Papers - I’ve worked my way through them; but they’re more of a campaign document than anything else. I want an actual history of the compromises, the arguments, and so on.
  • The history of abolition in the United States. Bound for Canaan gives a good quick overview; but I’d like a more detailed treatment.
