After getting fan patch 1.17, the next mod I highly suggest getting is the Camera Mod, especially if you’re a caster or hunter. This let’s you zoom out to more playable levels, since at a certain point your arrows will achieve a speed that lets them shoot past your line of sight with the default camera:

And this is the green bow I used for a long ass time before finally getting that nice drop on the right:

Notice a couple things… it’s very slow, but has an attack speed boost. That attack speed boost converts slow, large damage items into much faster large damage items, and that’s a good thing. That +19% damage modifier, the attack speed, and that nice OA modifier (gives more crit!) caused this random green drop to outclass every single blue drop I found for the following 15 levels, because the +% modifiers meant that my power kept increasing as my stats and abilities increased. This is the type of balance oversight that this game has a lot of, unfortunately. All those normalization tricks that WoW uses for weapons of different speed types… those aren’t in this game. So if you have a Rune or something that gives +damage to a weapon, that damage is going to be applied to every weapon the same way, so a fast weapon will benefit. The way percentages add up in this game has given many a hardcore min/maxer a headache, and the statistical debates on the forums prove it.

Still, don’t let that stuff keep anyone from buying this awesome game. You don’t need to know too much about what’s going on under the hood in order to build your character up, as long as you’re willing to apply some common sense mathematics to figure out what works best.

Thanks for the Camera Mod link Pogo. I’ve had that very problem, especially now considering I’m using Appollo’s Curved Bow, and as such, the arrows are screaming towards their targets.

I do agree with the fact that green items can be superior over the blue and purple stuff, however, in epic and legendary, the blue and purples are useful because of the fact they can provide various elemental/stun/bleeding resistance bonuses which do come in handy; just like in Diablo II with nightmare and hell, the player starts out in the later difficulties with the negative resistances.

You know, I’ve been really lazy with the mods for Titan Quest. I’ve got Defiler, xMax, TQVault, FanPatch and now the camera mod. I know there is the all-skins one, which I haven’t bothered with yet. Is there any others I should look at getting?

Also, the reason for Defiler isn’t for the cheaty aspects which it provides, but more because it has a few handy built in mods. One apparently fixes the RNG to balance out the drops of rare items, and one is a toggled mode for showing dropped items (rather than holding down the alt key etc).

I’ve also used Defiler for allowing relics to be put into blue and purple items (for single player), as it seemed like such a waste to get super nice gear and have it be somewhat useless compared to a really great “enhanced” green item.

Some people consider it cheating per se, but I was always disappointed that Iron Lore didn’t seemingly consider that when balancing gear drops.

Bah, now ya’ll have me itching to give this another round. I wish Steam would let me register my disc copies.

After getting the latest fanpatch, get the PRNG fix at titanquest.net. It’s named [REL] Random Number Generator MOD. It might help in getting more varied loot.

Backup game.dll and engine.dll.

For MP, everyone has to have it so that everyone can see the same loot.

I skipped that mod since I also felt it’d be cheating, but the more I look at it the more I realize that the balancing is screwed up enough that it makes sense to cheat this. Having an upgraded green drop beat out blue drops for so many levels in a row is just… heartbreaking.

Yeah not being able to use the shiny new loot you just picked up because it’s inferior really sucks. Especially because some of those blue and purple items look really cool.

That’s where sharing between characters comes in. If you have the storage space still (and you should), or if you are playing multiple characters at the same time, that extra loot doesn’t have to go to waste just because it’s a little worse than what that character is using. Send it over to another character in a separate game and make use of it there.

That’s a valid point, and I did have reams of characters to be honest. The thing is getting what should be an awesome drop for that particular character and having to pass on it for utility reasons just stinks.

So eventually I just utilized that hack to make that a non-issue.

Yes! Check out the Underlord mod. Underlord + FanPatch = TQ+. It does so much without going crazy and changing the entire game.

So you’re saying that my best chance of getting past the fix I’m in now is to start a new character instead of playing my Hunter. And that new character might find a bow for my hunter to use.

Any recommendations on the baddest ass magic user in the game? Perhaps a necro-equivalent, or someone who shoots lightening at enemies or something? Someone who will be a good, easy character to get through normal difficulty with? (I include that for Staff Sargeant’s benefit, because whenever someone asks for recommendations, he starts going off on which characters are awesome in difficulties past normal. And I’ll be honest, I don’t think I’ll ever get there in a game like this. I’ll be extremely lucky just to somehow finish the game on Normal one day. Maybe).

I have an Oracle… Storm+Spirit. Lightning bolt is a nuke on a cooldown timer. Thunderball kinda resembles the D2 static lightning spell, except it is cast and then blows up to stun enemies that are rushing you. Chain Lightning is an added effect onto Lightning. I went Spirit for the triple staff bolt attack which does a lot of damage with a good staff, and also to summon a lich king for shits and giggles.

It’s fun, but there’s not much variety to it. Then again I skipped all the ice stuff in the Storm mastery.

Prophet (Storm + Dream). Squall and its synergy can get you through most of Normal. Dream will give you survivability.

Not sure if it’s been linked before: TitanCalc is great for seeing what the classes have to offer. Obviously only relevant for unmodded games.

My own spellcaster is a spirit and earth type. She was/is quite strong in normal, just got her to Epic, mostly by a series of respecs later in the fourth act, by pulling points away from my liche king (who started to get taken out very quickly), and into eruption. I managed to get right into Hades before she died first time around. Admittedly, it was a little easier going through because I was able to bring in items from my Hunter wandering around in the latter difficulties. She finished off the final boss with the full Vestments of the Battlemage that I had put together. Still, most of the damage that I did against the boss was due to eruption, summoning the Outsider and using a scroll to summon a Cyclops. Mobs, given their pack mentality, are easy to knock out with eruption.

The grand plan at some point is to have a Liche and a Core Dweller wandering around. With the amount of health regen she has, plus the Life Drain skill, she is a bit of a tank. A little unintuitive too really. But that’s the way the game goes. Also, if things get rough, then Vision of Death is very nice to use, causes all enemies in an area to scatter.

Next, what level is your haruspex?

I think you can get around the wall you are at as a bowuser by simply respeccing your character, provided you have the gold. Act IV is tough without a doubt, and it becomes apparent when moving into epic difficulty where Act I is incredibly easy in comparison.

If you were to respec, then apply all points you have into study prey and flush out. My current Haruspex, when using study prey is negating something in the order of 60% of the pierce resistance of the enemies (I also have +2 to all skills). Flush out is also applied to any enemy which has been hit with the study prey skill, and so, on top of getting the reduced pierce resistance, they will suffer a drop to their defensive rating, which means greater chance of being hit. If the weapon has elemental damage, that will increase it.

The other thing is to max the marksmanship line, including puncture shot and scatter shot, and have that set as your default attack. It is an expensive line skillwise, but does significant damage to large groups of enemies. Those two skill lines alone will greatly increase the amount of damage done.

Act IV you should find plenty of Toxo’s. They are the most powerful bow in Act IV, but you have to had made it to Hades to find them. The merchant in Rhodes I think will sell them too. Any bow with the Artemis’ Bowstring is going to be powerful. Use you judgement as to what sort of bow you would want.

As far as other skills go in the hunting class, I wouldn’t worry too much about decoy. It just never really got the aggro of the enemy too well. It worked, but not as effectively as it should have. I only have one point invested in it, and that is for the Secret Passage, and for one reason only which I won’t spoil here.

There is some benefit to ensnare, but that is best when being chased by the lancers and some breathing room is required. Call of the Hunt is my own little Get out of Jail free card, hitting that before a boss battle, or an area crawling with baddies is when it comes in on its own, a bit like hitting the battle marker shrine. Shame the cooldown on it is very long. Art of the Hunt is a very good passive ability (it will reserve some mana when active) mostly for the chance to avoid projectiles, and increased movement.

Dream tree I don’t have too much experience with. My own Haruspex is using Trance of Convalescent, and Lucid Dream/Premonition/Temporal Flux only. Still haven’t maxed any of those yet.

Yeah it should be said again that Marksmanship is one of those skills that you put onto your LMB attack and use all the time. You should have enough energy regen gear to make the mana loss inconsequential. I have 2 buffs going that reserve mana and I essentially never run out of mana on my hunter unless I just summoned 2 wolves in a row and buffed all 3 of us with the regeneration natura skill.

It would probably be easier to skip the energy regen from the gear and just chug the occasional potion. Any regen of course is a bonus, but not really necessary I believe.

Obviously, having the Trance of Convalescence active for my character helps immensely with the regen. I don’t think either of the other two trances in the dream tree are any good for a bow user, though I haven’t really tried anyway.

Eh, less buttons to hit. Energy regen is like candy in this game, it’s on items that you wouldn’t think had any reason to serve that purpose.

Not really. I was only responding to the comment Becoming made about annoying blue/purple drops that you can’t upgrade and are worse than current equipment. It is true, however, that playing characters in tandem, or having one ahead of others, will net you some decent trades from time-to-time that may satisfy that craving for a better weapon.

I was going to comment earlier, but I don’t think my advice would help much. My Haruspex was one of my favorite characters and I didn’t worry over much about not having the best equipment. The key to the Haruspex, I found, was not his equipment but the massive health regen rate I had built up on him through the use of Herbal Remedy and Trance of Convalescence (as mentioned earlier) coupled with some regen rate boosting items. While my dps may have been much lower than what some would want I still thought I was taking down opponents fairly rapidly, most before they would get into melee range. Being speedy also helped.

I wasn’t fond of the highest level playing in TQ; the character development and loot-finding slowed down too much to make it worthwhile for me, even though I had characters playing in Epic and Legendary. The vast majority of my eventual 45 different characters (all mastery combos and the solos) stopped after Normal was done (level 36 or higher), 29 without a single death.

If you want a good spellcaster type, an Oracle (Spirit/Storm), focusing on the Ice Shard branch and using the Liche King as a buffer can manage most anything. However, while I’ve found some combos easier to play than others, I never found any to be absolutely impossible and you should be able to build a combination that you enjoy and works well. The worst times were particular melee characters going up against the big bosses that can one-hit murder you. The dodge/hit/heal routine gets old quick. Range characters have it much easier in TQ.

Dream tree I don’t have too much experience with. My own Haruspex is using Trance of Convalescent, and Lucid Dream/Premonition/Temporal Flux only. Still haven’t maxed any of those yet.

Yeah, I had 7/8 points into Lucid Dream, a couple in Premonition, and a couple in Temporal Flux. So after reading your advice last night, I respec’d and took out all but one point in those three, and maxed out Study Prey and put three points into Flush Out. I couldn’t get any more points back, since you can’t respec points put into the “Big Plus”, which is what I did for the most part. (I’m level 34).

I played for a bit. I’m still having trouble in the section right after the first hub city in Act IV, but not as much trouble. So the respec was definitely a good call. But I’m still getting pounded a lot before I’m able to kill someone because they’re so fast. I’m still chugging potions like they’re candy in order to survive. And even then, not surviving for too long. The study prey lets me kill them fast, but when there is three of them, I’m shooting at one of them while the other two are hitting me. When I try to apply the usual run tactics of the hunter, it doesn’t work well against these guys because they’re soooo fast. Hopefully I’ll fair better once I get past these specific creatures on speed who live in these woods.

What is Toxo? And Artemis’ Bowstring?

Also, is there a website that tells you where to warp to in the game in order to get different essences and materials for recipes? I need one more Hag’s skin for the latest recipe, and I’ve needed it since throughout Act III and now Act IV. I’m guessing I got the other 4 Hag’s skins in Act I or II. Is there a website that can help me track where to go get that last Hag’s Skin? Which portal, I mean?

Look at this post: http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showpost.php?p=2436794&postcount=2758

Accoding to that screenshot a toxo is a green bow and Artemis’ Bowstring would be a good (if not the best according to this thread) relic to put on the bow.
