Since building a character seems to be most of the game this seems like the way to go.
I tried it that way. It didn’t work for me. I would make all these choices, and then later in the game I would die, die, die until I quit. Maybe I would have enjoyed the game if I’d gone with some kind of super-build. I did try a super-build when I came back to the game a few years later, but again had the same problem in the expansion content. I probably just chose the wrong build.
I am intrigued by this idea of speeding up the game though. I always thought Titan’s Quest went by very very slowly and mostly involved killing things really slowly while backing away. If that process can be sped up, maybe the game won’t be as tedious.

I’d probably just give it my best shot and if I lose and don’t want to start over I’d walk away. I guess it depends how badly you want to see the end and how much click click you can tolerate before getting bored.
I’m usually not a big Diablo-like action RPG fan since the loot pinata doesn’t keep me interested. I either need to feel engaged with the action like I was in Victor Vran, or I need to feel like there is enough feedback for me to strategically plan things out to overcome challenges.
You can respec your mastery point distribution at certain cities, so it’s easy enough to try something else if you’d made the wrong choice. I don’t think you can change your masteries once you’ve started to put points into them, but most people seem to think just about any combo is viable. Equipment is also important, especially those that boost key stats that link to your masteries.
Not sure what this concept of “backing up” is, because right now I wade in and everything goes flying in multiple directions. It’s like the intro to Fellowship of the Ring where Sauron sweeps his weapon around. ;) Well, until I hit something really nasty, and then I need a rethink. I do find that you have to work to get the right gear, and use relics to boost your stats. It can make a big difference. There’s a lot of depth to building your character in TQ.

I’m having a graphical problem where some of the textures have a shimmering, grainy quality. Has anyone else encountered this?
You can see it especially on the boat and my characters tunic. During the game it’s actually shimmering. It’s really distracting.
What are you running it on? A mobo/laptop with onboard or dual GPU? People have reported it defaulting to the integrated GPU and having this kind of problem. If so force it to the right GPU in the GPU control panel.
Or try to turn off shadows and restart as that may be the cause as well.
I just want to chime in with my approval of the new game speed settings. It makes the travel between enemies and areas much more tolerable even though you’ve already seen those areas.
It’s a very good addition to this game.
Also, I created a Warfare character for the first time, and she is laying waste. Already level 3 and I’ve only died once right in the beginning to boars, but haven’t been threatened since I leveled up into Warfare mastery.
Silly question - what’s the key to hit for the quick item pickup?
There’s a quick item pickup button?
Oh my, there is! When did that get added!?
Oh yes, the button. The default is A, but of course you can change it.
Lol, is this new for 2016?
Nope, there are mentions to it online as back as 2007. But I think some of the devs had proficiency in divination or something. ;)
So, does Honing Blade work for the Illusionist as a pet class?
I’ve had to investigate more fixes to get this to launch consistently. When I came back to it, I just got a TQ.exe has failed error on launch, with nothing changed. A cache check fixed that up and then it broke again.
The troubleshooting thread on the Steam forum is a helpful repository of various things to try:

What seems to have done it for me is disabling the Steam overlay and setting Win Compatibility 7. Steam overlay just apparently does not play nice. Seems to be launching consistently now at least.
Good news is the devs are paying attention to these and are working on fixes. I’ll probably have to support that by buying a gift copy or two. Nice devs.
That’s some developer love for a guy named Gryndyl (who used to post at Qt3!) who did a wonderfully clever and droll AAR of sorts here.

From the Grim Dawn thread:
I’ve always had this same problem with Titan Quest. And now I’m having it again with this pure Warrior I’m playing. The game really starts to get hard before you get to Delphi. I’ve already died a dozen times, and it’s still only Act 1. I must be just horrible at this game, and making these characters. On the bright side, when I discovered a good sword at the vendor’s it made a HUGE difference, and ever since Delphi I’ve been kicking ass again. I still guzzle health potions as fast as I possibly can while I’m fighting, but at least I’m not dying since then.
I think that’s the main reason this game never really clicked with me. I’m just not good at it. I always create these characters that should be great, whether I follow a guide or not, and they end up dying a lot, which is a serious de-motivator.
Gear makes a big difference, and you really need to constantly be looking at what gear you can replace. Also, don’t neglect your relics/charms, because adding a bunch of completed relics to your gear (non-enchanted I’m afraid) can make quite a difference. And then there’s the artifacts, which take a while to complete but can also add some nice buffs.
I found for most of Act I I was going up and down on the leveling curve, and when I started to fall behind I’d really look at how I could fix it. Eventually I ended up with some pretty nice gear, and to be honest I’m actually waiting for the game to catch up (now halfway through Act II). I’m starting to meet stronger resistance again, and my epic (or whatever the colour blue represents) gear is going to need overhauling soon.
I’m also absolutely loving the Dream mastery. It can put our some massive damage, and the area-effect / directional spells can wipe out half a dozen creatures with one click. I have to watch my defence, though; getting boxed in leads to some tense situations. So far the only boss that’s really challenged my build was Alastor, but that’s because he took forever to kill. Since then the rest have been much easier than my previous playthroughs.
[edit] Oh noes! The latest patch has nerfed my favourite Dream spell! :o I hope they didn’t break the fun…

You didn’t have any trouble with the Cyclops in Act 1? That guy alone killed me 4 times. I just couldn’t figure out any way of killing him, he was just too strong, and I quickly ran out of potions. So then I had to figure out how to kill him without guzzling any potions. How I finally did it is that I picked up a bow off the ground nearby and just pecked him to death, and then switch back to dual-wielding swords again. Pecking him to death with that bow took about 10 minutes even on very fast game speed. It was tense and boring at the same time!

I’ve never really had problems like those you describe. If anything, the game has always felt a little easy to me.
On another note, I started up the anniversary edition and wondered why it all seemed so immediately similar. Then I remembered that I bought the iPad version a few months ago and had played that. I suspect some of the assets for the anniversary edition came from the conversion to the iPad. Either way, the iPad version is quite good, if you have an iPad that can handle it.
I wonder if I’m doing something wrong with my builds or if I’m just getting unlucky with the equipment I was getting.
That’s another thing I don’t get about people who like the concepts of “Seasons” and all that, where you get to start completely from scratch. Starting over completely for Anniversary Edition means I don’t have access to any of my old stash full of artifacts and essences and other equipment that could have been useful to me. So it means I die more for that reason too.
