TNR's Leiberman endorsement

The poor writers trying to defend their stupid editor’s decision…

And Lieberman’s Connecticut senatorial races–in particular, his initial upset victory over Weicker–were some of nastiest in the state’s history, which Lieberman won precisely because he was willing to play hardball. Whether it makes you think better or worse of him, Lieberman successfully portrayed Weicker as old and out-of-touch, even though Weicker was hardly out-of-touch; he was in fact a highly effective senator, both on national policy and on Connecticut issues. To close the deal, Lieberman delivered a series of cheap shot commercials that demonized Weicker as a right-winger, even though Weicker was actually one of the most moderate Republicans in the Senate–so moderate that he later left the Republican Party.

This is exactly why I can’t stand Leiberman. Weicker was an incredibly effective Senator for Connecticut who, incidently, went on to become Governor. I think Leiberman’s a sanctimonious prick who goes with whatever will win him what he wants. Most politicians are that way, but he pretends he isn’t, and wraps himself in a religious and pure aura of goodness that really bothers me. And after the Weicker race, he never had a tough one again. Christ, during his last race he ran against a guy who was convicted a year later of getting blow jobs from a prostitute’s children in the Waterbury mayor’s office. That was the same race, by the way, when he was the Vice Presidential candidate - instead of committing to one thing, he decided to have his cake and eat it, too. What if Gore had won? Then our state would have to deal with replacing him as Senator. I almost voted for his opposition, except that rumblings of that guy’s sick behavior had already started to to bubble up.

Cancelled my subscription to TNR. I can’t take this sort of idiocy.

I’m sposed to want to vote for this guy after reading this?

I cancelled mine earlier, not because of this, but there’s something about the story that makes me think TNR is picking something controversial as GOTY to get attention. Y’know?
