Brooklyn is the tutorial. If you don’t like / can’t pass the tutorial maybe you were right and it’s $15 gone.

I loved the Division. It’s a shooter. Not everyone likes shooters.

I love shooters. I think I’ll just avoid the mission for now and run around, see if there’s other stuff to do.

Oh is the game different from the trial? When I played the trial you started by setting up an HQ in the old post office I think, down by Madison Square Gardens.

I’m making myself not pick this up as number 2 will be along soon.

Yeah, I probably gotta go with milspec on this one, might not be worth banging your head against the wall if it’s this much grief this early.

I am kind of curious what specific problems you’re seeing? I play on Xbox so I use a controller, but for what I’ve heard mouse is better for dealing with recoil. Is there something else that’s making things difficult?

I wish I could put my finger on it. Third person doesn’t help, as I’m always better with first person, but maybe I don’t move enough or I’m not good enough with my shots. I dunno.

I’ll go back to playing Steep for now. Now THAT’S a great fucking game.

Yeah, I’m going to play Steep one of these days. I’m holding out for zombie or alien invasion DLC.

I seem to recall like 1 page back I recommend that you NOT get this game :)

Especially the early game wants you to group up to get past the missions. I barely finished the siege mission solo and that was after like 20 frustrating attempts. Once you get a few skills things get easier, but it will always be a MP game at heart.

Sorry, you must’ve gotten lost in a sound chorus of support for the game. I’ll listen more closely next time.

There is absolutely no MP requirement except the incursions, and you can even do some of those solo if you gear up right.

I picked up this game on sale recently as well, and just installed it last night. I had played during a couple of free weekends a long time ago, and apparently still have a level nine character.

I remember the gist of the game, but not much of the particulars. The Brooklyn tutorial doesn’t sound familiar. Is there any reason to keep my existing character and just play forward, or am I safe to delete him and start over?

It’s technically true that it’s not required, but it’s what they designed around and it’s much harder solo.

I’ll go back to ESO. THEY get how to make content approachable for solo players.

I take issue with using the word “much”, but that’s going to be YMMV. It’s easier to play with others because you’ve got someone to heal you if you go down, but enemy encounters are scaled to how many people are playing.

Until, I got the turret, it was nearly impossible for me to finish a mission. Now maybe I just need to “git gud” but I didn’t find anything fun about running these missions solo. And the game nearly BEGS you to queue up for random groups.

It’s the reason why I haven’t returned to it myself. Just so many other good single player games that aren’t bolted onto a MP experience. That’s said, this IS the BEST of that MP/FPS genre!

Sure, but that only compensates so much. In fact, I’ve rarely found it to be tuned correctly in almost any game that does that sort of scaling. It just depends on whether the game expects you to be playing with other people, in which case solo is usually frustrating and unforgiving, or solo, in which case coop is usually a bit too easy. The Division is pretty clearly the former.

And yeah, obviously what qualifies as too hard will vary significantly from player to player. I think it’s too hard to be truly enjoyable but I have managed. Sounds like it may not even get that far for Brian, and I wouldn’t blame him at all.

I am the last person to suggest someone “git gud” at a game, I am a middle aged dude with middle aged reflexes. One of the things I really appreciate about The Division is how tactically aware it is, and how positioning and planning can really alter success. Additionally, changing out skills as needed is helpful - I’ve enjoyed the seeker mines lately, you can drop them at your feet and watch them find enemies to blow up.

I’d also propose that if you haven’t played in some time, that you might find the more recent patches have made difficulty scaling a little more favorable to the single player. There were definitely times a year ago or so where I would find myself encountering enemies a few levels above me that could one shot me easy. Very frustrating.

As another middle-aged dude with middling reflexes, I think TD does a great job of scaling for solo vs group experiences. I found leveling to be quite challenging, but it became easier as I got more abilities (particularly healing skills) and started using the cover system appropriately.

Now, I can solo anything short of incursions. Maxxed gearsets are a big part of this, but it’s also knowing which skills to load for which content and how to move around in a fight. I’m still not great at the game – I’ll never be one of those players who can strafe around at max speed while landing headshot after headshot. But I choose gearsets that cater to my playstyle. It works great!

Opening new skills and better equipment definitely helps a lot. But, well, there’s several hours where you don’t have that stuff first.

Yep – the first time you level a character is much more difficult than I think people expect. All the more so if you’re coming from a game where cover isn’t a critical mechanic. In TD, a non-tanky character (including almost anyone leveling up) is either in cover or about to be murdered.

I might see if Wildlands is on sale this Sale cycle. I’ve read it’s great solo.
