Top Five

OK, top five sci-fi movies. If enough people want to play I’ll tally up the votes (number 5 gets 1 point, number 1 gets 5 points, etc). Anyway, here’s mine. I tried to keep it to one movie per director, otherwise it would be all Kubrick and Gilliam:

  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  2. Aliens
  3. 12 Monkeys
  4. The Empire Strikes Back
  5. The Matrix

Blade Runner
Aliens
12 Monkeys
Fifth Element
Star Wars

Alien
Blade Runner
The Empire Strikes Back
The Terminator
Black Hole (no, just kidding. The Matrix.)

Matrix
12 Monkeys
Jin Roh
Blade Runner
Ghost in the Shell

20 Minutes Into the Future (Max Headroom UK movie)
Aliens
Blade Runner
Star Trek 2
The Ice Pirates

(just kidding about that last one. Uhh, Buckaroo Banzai instead, yeah I am actually serious about Banzai.)

I don’t understand why so many people like Twelve Monkeys. That movie sucked monkey balls.

In other news, glancing at IMDB, I notice that somehow “From Justin to Kelly” has beaten out Manos as the worst movie ever. Clearly the voting system is flawed.

Buckaroo Banzai is a good pick.

Also, I’m going to assume that if people don’t number the choices the first one listed is number one.

1 Blade Runner
2 Empire Strikes Back
3 Ghost in the Shell
4 Minority Report
5 Dark City

Two lists:

Important:

  1. Dr. Strangelove (I’m not sure if its sci-fi, but everyone else lists it, so what the hell.)
  2. The Day The Earth Stood Still

Entertaining:

  1. Matrix
  2. Dark City
  3. Empire Strikes Back

I certainly wouldn’t say that #1 is five times better than #5.

On an amusing note, this page of critic’s “best sci-fi movies” has one guy listing John Carpenter’s “They Live.”

1 - Blade Runner
2 - 12 Monkeys
3 - The Empire Strikes Back
4 - Aliens
5 - The Fifth Element

  1. the Hellraiser movie that’s in space

  2. Farenheit 451

  3. Sleeper

  4. Krull the Conquerer

  5. a tie between Blade Runner and Back to the Future II

    -Tom

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Star Trek II
  3. Aliens
  4. Terminator 2
  5. Dark City

Yeesh, four of my five are sequels.

I’m not going to rank them in order.

  • Bladerunner
  • Alien
  • Close Encounters
  • Terminator 2
  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Honorable mentions include Star Wars, Total Recall, Terminator, Aliens, Forbidden Planet, E.T., and 2001.

Lol. You forgot Jason X.

  1. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension
  2. The Day the Earth Stood Still
  3. Star Wars
  4. Bladerunner
  5. Metropolis

And for sheer fun when watched totally drunk:

Okay, I actually liked that movie, so fuck you, Tom Chick and dandylife. Also, what’s with people liking Terminator 2 better than Terminator, and Aliens better than Alien? In both cases, the sequel had much better special effects, but the original movie had a much better story. I think I am turning into a cranky old man at the age of 32.

For one thing, while Alien had a fine cast, Aliens featured one of the most memorable group of characters in any film, with Ripley, Hicks, Hudson, Vasquez, Gorman, Apone, Bishop and the rest. Plus, it’s one of the all-time greatest quotable films. I’d bet that most anyone reading this thread could reel off a dozen quotes from it automatically.

I always thought Alien was boring. And I really like Harry Dean Stanton.

Now Aliens on the other hand… “Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?”

Empire Strikes Back
Aliens
Star Wars
Body Snatchers (seventies one)
War of the Worlds (fifties one)

Sci fi is a hard genre to pin down …

etc

  1. Aliens
  2. Terminator 2
  3. Empire Strikes Back
  4. Star Wars
  5. Back to the Future

And I know a lot of people that perfer Terminator 2 and Aliens more then the originals, besides some of the people on these boards.

Empire Strikes Back
Day the Earth Stood Still
Star Wars
Alien
Blade Runner
