The BBC and other UK news outlets are starting to report that Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in critical condition following a 280mph crash in a jet-powered car while filming a segment for the program. Apparently they were trying to break the UK land speed record.
He should´ve left testing to “The Stig”, but that is some kind of Stewe Irvin thingie… it had to happen some day. Maybe they should make a crossover in a Corvette Stingray.
Latest news has him as “serious but stable” with a “significant brain injury”. Not much to go on, unfortunately. One positive development: A bunch of petrolheads at a UK automotive forum managed to raise over GBP 25,000 in less than 48 hours for the Air Ambulance service that whisked Hammond to the hospital.
Hope he pulls through, but it’s hard to be optimistic. Cristiano da Matta’s into his seventh week of recovering from his Elkhart Lake incident with a deer.
