Looks nice but I wish it had multiplayer of some kind. I wonder if they’ll build anything Live-related into it, like leaderboards, etc.

Holy crap, also announced is that Beyond Good & Evil HD is coming out on XBLA next month too. I had no idea this was even in the making…WOW!

I’m more pumped about Torchlight 2 personally, but that’s pretty cool.

If they released it for PSN I’d be tempted to buy it again though.

Oh man lounging on my couch, playing Torchlight on my giant TV, mind blown, springtime destroyed! Really interested in how the game plays with a controller. Can’t wait!!!

Never did finish the first one, I think I stopped on level 23 , I got tired of sending my dog to constantly sell the tons of loot being dropped.

I also didn’t like that it was virtually impossible to get a full set of 1 kind of armor, so my character always looked retarded in his mix and match gear.

I’m pretty happy with the control scheme. If you’ve played Dark Alliance or Champions of Norrath you get the idea. Minus the jumping.

Combat works a bit differently, and is better suited to the console as a result of the changes. UI is burned to the ground and rebuilt.

All the content is in there but the menuing system is totally different, there’s no inventory grid ( you can just carry 50 items - less pet/town management ), potions and scrolls stack to 99, potions auto-select the best one for the job, so on and so forth.

I find it easier to use combos of skills with a controller than with my fingers hovering over the number keys.

Ranged classes feel more viable - it is much easier to kite and dodge missiles with direct control. Control is analog as well. Melee combat is no longer single target. Lots of under the hood changes.

Mostly it’s nice to play it on my couch with rumble. Now my wife will actually play and won’t complain about cramped mouse hand, and my kid can now scoot around it reasonably effectively.

There are leaderboards - it aggregates gold and kills for a ‘score’ and takes whatever the high watermark between your characters is, by difficulty.

Looks good!

I’m happy you guys made a console version and I hope you do the same for your upcoming games.

Most people nowadays are starting to realize that consoles are the way to go, particularly with this genre.

Hopefully, you look into making a Facebook version as well.

Can’t wait for your releases!

Thanks, Travis!

I only made it through with one character on the PC version, so the XBLA version will be like a whole new game!

Travis, are you making any balance changes in the XBLA version of Torchlight to account for interface differences or address late game issues?

We’ve definitely done some balance changes. There’s less trash loot, and boosted sell prices a bit to compensate. Ordrak is less of an attrition fight, and honestly the changes to melee combat and the pace of your attacks vs monsters make ripple changes throughout. Also, the Black Palace is MUCH less a demoralizing slog :)

Just how much of a giant pain in the ass would it be to patch all those changes and the new control scheme (optional, with gamepad support) to the pc version? O:)

Yes, I’d love to have that new gamepad control scheme on the PC!

I’m curious if there’s a PSN version in the works or is it XBLA only?

Pretty much an enormous undertaking to patch to the pc. Fundamental changes to the way that inventory and skills work are incompatible with current characters and the ui wouldn’t work as a hybrid mouse/controller setup.

No PS3 version in the works - and if we had tried there is no way we’d be done right now. It was a fairly long haul for a heretofore only PC dev.

All I ask is that as you move forward, try not to forget that not all PC players want to use a gamepad and keep a proper PC UI.

Except that the UI in the PC version isn’t all that good. :)

But it does its job just fine. The number of half-assed console port UI’s I’ve seen in the past couple years is crazy and it needs to stop.

I’m not concerned about “fine”. I like Torchlight a lot, but the UI is absolutely the worst thing about it. It’s certainly no shining example of a proper PC UI you’re talking about. I mean, it’s a mouse-driven system but I can’t just click on a skill to use it. I can right click, but that’s pretty weird. The best way to use abilities is by pressing 1 through 0, but that’s pretty clunky once you have a lot of things and potions to use, some of which have to be called up quickly during combat.

I hate to rag on the game because it really is fantastic. But the UI changes for the 360 version sound way better to me. Mr. Baldree up there seems to agree as well.

I’m curious if the Torchlight 2 UI will be changed at all from the original in light of the 360 revamp (I understand not patching it into the existing game). I’ve always felt the Diablo-ish games would play fine on a PC with a gamepad as long as the UI was tailored for it.

Yes, I definitely hope gamepad controls are an option for Torchlight 2 even if they don’t come to the current PC game. Games like Dark Alliance worked very well on consoles and were much more comfortable to play than the usual mouse-controlled Diablo-style PC games.
