Ok thats cool, really loving this game. One of those just play a bit more games.

For anyone playing Torchlight 1 or, like me, re-playing Torchlight 1 due to being on a Diablo 3 beta weekend withdrawal… I decided to check out mods and…

you too can play an Assassin with a cave bat as your pet!

Since you bumped the thread anyway, I’ll ask: any other good mods for Torchlight? There’s like a bazillion* of `em now.

*estimate may be inaccurate and/or not a real number

I haven’t dug into it too far. I just got two from the “most popular mods” list. If I start digging, I’m going to spend more time troubleshooting and testing mods than actually finishing the game (which I never have).

Gah, fuck it, I’ll dig.

This texture mod looks interesting. I like the textures from the game but they do end up being a little flat.

I did find a mod manager called HotSpot which might be useful: doesn’t work with every mod, but it’s supposed to download & install them automatically and can even check for incompatibilities (in theory - no idea how well it works).

Holy cow what a fun game. I just sold my copy of Diablo 3 so I can play this more. :)

But man, the difficulty spike in the Dark Palace is pretty frustrating. I’ve been running a summons-based Alchemist with melee weapons. Is the consensus that ranged wands are best for Alchemists?

And is it true as someone says just above that some of the best stuff comes from vendors in higher levels? Cuz I never even LOOK at the vendor stuff (partly b/c the shopping/comparing interface is such a pain to use).

Welcome to two years ago! Glad you could eventually make it.

LOL. Please welcome me to two years ago as well. I had a physically draining weekend between working on football/soccer fields up at my kid’s school on Saturday and then landscaping my own front yard most of Sunday, so Sunday afternoon I sat down in front of the PC and looked in my Steam library for something I could play that would be entertaining with minimal effort. Torchlight was already installed from when I bought it during a Steam Sale like 18 months ago, so I fired it up.

FUN! I am having a blast as a melee character. I love that you can send your pet back to town loaded with goodies to sell, and the pacing seems pretty well designed so far. Just about when I start to get bored with a theme or an area, it’s time for the next one. I like the little maps you can find that open portals to toally separate places, as well as the NPC that does the same. I like that equipment upgrades seem to come along at a fairly brisk pace, yet you don’t have to think too hard about which piece of similar equipment is better because another piece will come along soon anyway. It’s a great “just one more area” Diablo-style RPG, and now I’m going to be hooked on it for the next few weeks.

I need to go look for character building templates on the interwebs. Not sure which skills are worth investing in and how much to invest. The fishing thing is fun too, reminds me of Fate. What are the best things to turn my dog into?

I played Torchlight a bit last winter, then it dropped into the backlog, and now I’m playing it a bit again. Started a melee fighter, dual wielding axes because…well, because it’s two freaking axes. Love the skill that gives you a spirit dude that rides around on your back and blocks melee attacks.

I have no idea what’s best to turn pets into, but I like spiders. Also, I just realized yesterday that I can equip spells to my pet! Sometimes it’s good to be a n00b - that was my most exciting gaming moment all weekend.

I discovered that as well and it’s hilarious what you can do with it. I found a spell that summons a skeleton and I found a duplicate fireball spell, equipped both of them to my dog and now he follows me around popping out skeletons and fireballs at random. GOOD BOY! =)

Arise!

Torchlight is now available for free on the Epic store. Neat.

The first one is very bland. Skip the first one and buy the second. It’s better than free.

I seem to remember enjoying the first one more. Not sure why.

I never completed the second one but I beat the first a couple times. So I guess I liked the first one best. Sometimes less is more.

Two points in my favor.

I think the reason I liked the first one more at the time was I was starved for a good AARPG and here comes this from the makers of FATE, a game I thought was cool but never got super into. I got really hyped for it leading up to release and eventually when I picked it up I played it all the way through and enjoyed it.

By the time the second one came around, the genre had opened up a bit more (iirc) and/or it wasn’t as unique of an experience. I was still really excited for it, and still completed it. I’d say the sequel is indeed the better game, though I remember enjoying the class selection with the first game more.

Regardless, you can’t beat free. Anyone should just grab it and try it out, and if you enjoy the first one, know the second one is out there and it’s very good, even by today’s standards of AARPG excellence.
