That was the whole pitch from way back when they announced it would be three games and they’d have a mode that mashes them all together. I’m glad it finally became apparent to them that it needed to change.
I get a kick out of before they put out TW1, they told everyone ‘hey, it’s a trilogy, there will be a huge big mashup of them after the 3rd one is done’, and when Immortal Empires came along, 3/4 of every discussion was rage about having to have all 3.
It’s cool that they changed it but it seems a little late.
Starting from 2, you were always able to play mashup mode even if you didn’t own the previous games. You just couldn’t play as the factions from the previous games. With 3 they changed it so that that you had to own the previous 2 games to play mashup mode at all.
I think it’s the change from 2 to 3 that rubbed people the wrong way. That and that 3 seems to be an inferior game to 2 on a lot of levels.

Yes but not everyone reads dev blogs or follows along with the forums. Not to mention that we’re talking 7 years since the first game released.
It wasn’t clear at all from the store page that you would lose access to your previously purchased content (in the context of IE) which led to all kinds of confusion, including me personally. My friend any I thought it was a bug, as did a lot of other people. The decision was weird, frankly.
I honestly don’t really know anything about losing access to previously purchased content, but that sounds pretty freaking terribad of them.
I did the route of buying TW1 and being terrible at it, then buying TW2 and being terrible at it, then buying TW3 and all of the DLC I didn’t previously have, so I’m kind of dumb about what might have gone wrong for people. I don’t think I did much Mortal Empires in 2 if any.
It’s fair that they said things 7 years ago. They likely should have repeated it every time a release of any content was coming.

Mortal Empires required owning both TW1 and TW2.
From the Mortal Empires FAQ
Do I need to own both games?
Yes. Ownership of both games is required to play the Mortal Empires campaign. If you own any WARHAMMER I downloadable content, you will also be able to play as those races in Mortal Empires, with the temporary exception of Norsca.
Just to clarify, It isn’t that anyone lost anything or that it went wrong - it’s just that folks have always needed both TW1 and TW2 to play the Immortal Empires mode that came half a year after TW3 launched. Now you don’t need the previous base games to play the big sandbox.
This change really only effects people that wanted to play the sandbox but didn’t want to buy TW1 and 2 to do so - who those people are I have no idea. Also, you still don’t gain access to factions you don’t already own, so like even if all you have is TW3 you can’t play as the Dwarves unless you buy TW1, where they were one of the base races. But, they will show up as AI controlled, as one would expect.

That’s not quite accurate. You could play Immortal Empires without them but you lost access to everything you owned from TW1 and TW2 if you didn’t own both. In Immortal Empires that is, you could obviously load up TW1 and still play that as a separate game.
Example I have personal experience with: if you own TW1 + all DLC and bought TW3, you could play Immortal Empires but could only play the factions that came with TW3. If you bought the Ogres DLC you could play the ogres. But you could not play Dwarves, Greenskins, Wood Elves, Beatmen, etc. despite owning the game/DLC.
The fact that their own blog post today is inaccurate is indicative of what a mess their communication has been throughout. :)
Honestly that sounds more like a bug that was eventually corrected - I don’t believe it was supposed to work that way. The way I described is how I remember them explaining it, though of course I could have mis-understood. I’ve always had all the content as it came out, so I have no personal experience with issues related to it, unfortunately.
It was even worse, you had to have bought ALL 3 on the same store/service.
So, I did buy 1 & 2 on Steam, but had 3 via Gamepass, but couldn’t play Immortal Empires (posted WAY upthread).
Now I just need to see if it’s still on Gamepass…
It’s probably because Legend Of Total War made a video about this about a month ago.

I’m not sure where you’re getting that from because it’s never been the case.
Hence why people petitioned CA to change it so hard for nearly a year.
This is just wrong though. You have to have owned TW2 to have had access to Immortal Empires.
Like flat out. It’s always been like that until… yesterday.
It was the same with TW2. You had to own TW1 to play Mortal Empires at all. If you owned both then things unlocked as you owned them, whether that was DLCs or whatever, but to even load up the Mortal Empires mode you needed to own TW1 on the same store front you owned TW2 on.
3 just continued that system, only the requirement was owning 1 and 2.
Edit: We’re talking about a multi-month campaign by nearly every person involved with the game on Youtube to make this happen. The idea that they’ve all been wrong for a year and no one else noticed, including CA who presumably had to code the change, is… well it’s a bit unlikely. At some point someone would’ve said “but you can already do that,” I suspect.

I’m getting it from the best source: personal experience!
Here I am back on Sep 22 asking about it.
I don’t know what to tell you. As shown above, my friend and I were playing Immortal Empires without him owning it.

Given that it’s TW3 I assume it was some sort of bug since by design it should never have happened.
Did you actually play a game with him? It’s possible that a bug allowed him to try to join but it would’ve shit itself if you actually started.

Yep, played through a campaign as Cathay (me) and Ogres (him). Fairly short one since we both sucked and lost, but probably went 40+ turns.

Weird. Well, it’s fixed now so he can play Wood Elves. :)

Haha! Yeah, if it was a bug then I guess we were lucky! Sort of, it was incredibly confusing. And he wasn’t pleased to be on the hook for TW2 if he wanted to play the content he had spent around $100 on (especially since he had missed a recent sale and TW2 was back to $60 on Steam).
All that aside, I think it’s a terrific change by CA and glad it’s working how I expected it to initially.

Did you "host’ the game? Was your friend piggybacking off you owning all three games? I remember hearing about MP games where the friend could play with the host even if they didn’t have everything they would need if they were to play it single-player? It could have been some other game.

I was hosting and I did own all three of the Warhammer games.
It sounds like it was a glitch or something that was enabling him to play. Which I could see happening, since clearly it wasn’t actually relying on any sort of installed files, just a check with the store in question to make sure you were authorized to play / access factions (which is why people that owned different games on different storefronts had problems).
IIRC you couldn’t play Mortal Empires without owning TW1 (as well as TW2 of course), so I would have thought that opening Immortal Empires up regardless of TW1 and TW2 ownership would be a nice surprise. Whatever they were doing for the last six months was the beta, right?
Re: the trailer itself, that was fun! I thought I saw a few glimpses of the Tomb Kings fighting Bad Guys, so… does that make them Good Guys? I thought they were neutral, but the whole trailer was about dividing the world into Good and Evil.
