Trion's Defiance

I tried for 10 minutes, but couldn’t see any thread on this game.

Its the game that shares its world with the TV Show from SyFy, and that in itself is somewhat damnning.

That is, until I actually got to try the game this weekend. I’m under NDA so I won’t spoil too much, but suffice to say that the game is very polished already, and a TON of fun. Its an FPS MMO that works!

Anyways, I just thought I’d give you guys a heads up, that this could actually end up being a good game.

As for the Tv Show connection - I have no idea, but it does seem kinda doomed to fail.

I’d be interested in hearing details when the NDA is lifted (don’t those just ensure that only negative word gets out since those people don’t care about losing access? ).

No. they are there to prevent anyone from discussing an unfinished game or where features haven’t been shared with gamers at large yet (or spoil Defiance related plot points maybe in this case?). Personally, I’d much rather we respect them. At this stage, it’s only fair.

I’m in the beta too. But had lots of family stuff going on this weekend. So I hope I can get in again to give it more time and be able to share some details post NDA.

Wendelius

I’d rather everyone respect them as well, but that just doesn’t typically happen. :)

I have been in the beta as well. This is going to be a P2P like GW2; based on the preorder descriptions at the defiance website. I am assuming a cash shop as well although I haven’t heard any details about what the shop will be selling.

All I will say is that I think $60 is a bit much for this game.

I played the week-end :D
Trion is one of my favorite MMO makers.

Completelly random:

It seems the game include a “enters codes, gain stuff” evil scheme:

Some codes:

February 4, 2013: New Code Posted VGFSW9

With just this, seems a +4 inventory slots open (?), that can be really useful.

I hate this type of stuff, but other people seems to like it, so I report about it here.

So when this game release?, theres a hard date, the day the TV program release. I imagine the devs are nervous, both to finish everything and because want to show the cool stuff in the game.

I could use another mmofps just now. Planetside 2 is nice and all, but too much of only one thing get tiring, variety is good.

The game is still in NDA, so there can’t be much forum action …yet. But maybe the devs can allow some blogger or youtube celebrity to play the game, record it, and post it online. So at least some people start to talk about this game.
I suppose that will do that… wen are ready to do that, … probably have a plan, and don’t want to create hype too son, but in the right time, to orchestrate the maximum hype at release day.

At least… what is know about the TV part? I imagine the TV program will be less shy about leaking details.

So, is this thing like a Planetside clone, or is it more standard MMO-ish?

More standard mmo-ish. The random missions that pop up everywhere are quite fun. The gunplay was ok as well. Looks somewhat “dated” compared to Firefall though.

Maybe, but Firefall barely exists.

I just copied and pasted 63 codes into a webpage for a game that I don’t even intend to play.

God damn you.

HAha; I did the same :)

Which is a shame, it had a lot of nice features. PVP Matches were quite nice and the gunplay felt good.
Never got into the LORE though, or if it had any… Felt like a sandbox tbh, whereas defiance had an actualy story arch – even though it seemed like in beta you were just doing the breadcrumbs from 1 quest hub to the next – which is pretty predictable and boring.

Holy crap. $59.99 for the base game.

$39.99 for the just announced Season Pass.

Insanity.

Um…no. Sixty clams up front, plus DLC? It’s an intriguing concept, to some extent–though I’m more interested in Planetside style shooters than MMO/FPS hybrids with “boss battles,” aka PVE–but I think I’d only try it if it was F2P. I played Rift for a bit, and thought it was a good effort, so I don’t doubt Trion can deliver a competent product (though this multiplatform stuff I’m not sure about in terms of their expertise), but there’s nothing I’ve seen about Defiance that would make me shell out sixty bucks.

Plus, the marketing has been really terrible for this game. I expect the sales to tank hard.

I am not sure I understand. The game is sold as a box copy without a monthly fee. And it is available on consoles as well as PC. I haven’t played much yet but actually looking forward to both the game and the show. I don’t expect guild wars 2 type of content, but I definitely expect more game than most standard fps games. The season pass isn’t a bad deal either if you expect to play the game for a long time, but at only 20% savings it doesn’t penalize you for buying them one at a time if you want to wait and see as well.

I don’t think the gameplay is for a massive audience, but I do think they have actually developed a good business model for this game and interested enough to see how it plays with the show as well.

  1. It’s a game that ties in to a Syfy TV show that looks like a typical Syfy TV show. I’d wager that most people are gun-shy of any game that is scheduled to launch alongside a TV show or movie due to the track record of these things.

  2. It’s launching on consoles at the end of their cycle and it’s MP only.

  3. It’s launching on PC at $59.99 which is the kiss of death unless you’re one of the big titles.

  4. Marketing has been almost nonexistent.

When I look at all that, I quickly come to the conclusion that this game is going to die right out of the gate. I’d be surprised if it sold more than 500K overall. There will be no playercount after a few weeks, thus rendering any Season Pass a sick joke.

I can see where you’re coming from, and if I was experiencing a drought of content I might be more interested. But I’m not. This is essentially an MMO, and conceivably competes in roughly the same space as stuff like Planetside, or SWTOR, or LOTRO, or some weird sort of intersection of these, not in the same space as CoD or Battlefield games. The pricing model that is evolving for massively multiplayer games is F2P; you can try it out and see what the fuss is about, and if you want to buy in you can. I admit, GW2 got me to buy the game, but they had an established property and were offering a huge amount of content up front. It’s not that I think Defiance is going to be bad–I have no idea one way or another–but that in this marketplace, they’re asking a lot upfront for an unproven product with a fair amount of competition, at least in the general area.

I suspect, though, that the key is “console.” There isn’t much in the console space like this, or like MMOs in general, so that audience may well find paying for this a lot more acceptable. I really wonder how well it’s going to go over for PC users though. I guess we’ll see.

The game is actually pretty good - I just am not interested in a game at 59.95 anymore. Its a shame, because its a solid title with some good ideas

If left to mature, it could become quite the game, but yeah, lack of any marketing makes that hard. Its weird that Scyfy hasnt marketed it, though.

You get a Quad vehicle after about 20 minutes of play. They have world events. Head shots actually kill things. And it is not a “fantasy realm” MMO. Those are 4 pluses in my book. I put a couple of hours in- it’s really not bad-certainly more fun than some of the MMO’s out there now. No sub is nice but 60 bucks–eh I need a sale for sure.
