Most stores don’t even have stickers on the games yet but they will ring up half price. When I went the employees were randomly scanning titles because they didn’t have a list themselves. I was able to pick up four titles myself (luckiest I’ve ever been on one of these deals).
This list may still be incomplete though- there are reports of more games at 50% off (Onimusha 3 is one recent mentioned title, wish I had known about that one).
This is not too surprising. There was a story in Thursday’s NYT about how its parent corporation is refocusing on its more profitable business (baby paraphenalia, I think) and is contemplating the sale on its toy unit (whose profits hve declined streadily since '99) I guess one of the first steps would be to reduce the volume of older inventory.
The one near my place in San Diego didn’t have much. I got Super Monkey Ball for $10, though. One of those games that I’ve been wanting to pick up for a long time, just never got around to.
The clerk says this is for a sale that’ll go “live” next week, so there may be other titles that show up then.
Good luck with Disgaea. I hunted all of Raleigh for a new copy and found that only the stores dealing with used stuff had it. Also, they were selling it for $59. USED.
One copy was at Toys R Us in my area. The one in my area was not picked over nearly as much as others have reported.
A side note: Is it me, or is the reason that Toys R Us is in such financial morass is that the layout of their stores suck? The first thing I had to wade through to get to the video games was an underbrush of clearance items, piled up in a mish mash of bins. I’ve seen neater flea market stalls.
my local toys r us started a 50% clearance on other things as well. When I went today they were bringing out the boxes outside. Picked up
No one lives forever 3.99
No one lives fprever 2 3.74
Backyard soccer 2.49
freedom force 2.50
that’s just the few I picked up. There were several grocery carts full, of pc games as well as other type toys, For instance I picked up each of my boys a tournament soccer ball for 3.49. Well worth taking a look at, especially if you have kids.
Drove to another TRU over lunch and picked up SSX3 for the GC and Mark of Kri for the PS2 (just couldn’t pass up the $7.50 price).
Since about the beginning of the year I’ve only been buying games once they drop down to $20 or less. While this means I can’t play the newest games for six months to a year, I’m still finding absolutely no shortage of PC or console titles. Even before this TRU sale I still had quite a backlog of great games. Only problem is that some games either never drop down or become really rare.
Case in point: I’m really disappointed I couldn’t find Disgaea or Guilty Gear X. Guess I may never get them without overpaying.
I’ve been mostly doing the same thing for years now, and my backlog of games is so crammed full, I may never get around to them all. What you lose in being current, you more than make up in being well-stocked.
Every once in a while, I’ll make an exception, but after buying Morrowind at full price only to see it packaged with all the patches and expansions for half what I paid before I ever got around to really playing it, I’m not making that mistake again. Yeah, I might miss a few sleeper hits that don’t get wide enough distribution, but I still have 200+ hours of Baldur’s Gate II and thousands of hours on other games to play through yet so it’s not like I’m all that hurting for more games to play.
The Toys-R-Us in Fair Oaks, CA (suburb of Sacramento) had everything still at full sticker price when I went by last Saturday. I may try again tomorrow but just wanted to say: :(
Probably. Of three TRUs in my area, two of them are absolutely disgustingly messy, while the third is neat enough to consider going there the once a year (Christmas, of course) I might actually need to buy toys.
