I’ve been pondering that this weekend as well. Bill Maher claimed on his show, (and I don’t know which poll he was reading) that the Democratic Senators like McCaskill in Missouri who lost their seat wouldn’t have done so if they hadn’t voted against Supreme Court confirmation of Cavanaugh (sp?). So their vote didn’t make a difference and we lost 5 democratic senators as a result of the backlash from voters. I’m thinking it’s still worth doing the right thing.

It is called leadership. It’s what LBJ did for civil rights, and FDR did for the New Deal and getting us into WWII, and Nixon did with China and of course JFK and going to the moon.

Politician are suppose to persuade the public to do hard things, not wait for popular opinion to do them.

If the public strongly objects to where you are leading then you get voted out of office, those are the risks.

Plus, Trump is a decidedly different animal than we’ve ever seen. Hard to deal with rule-breaking by the guy who was elected largely because he doesn’t follow the rules.
