What are you really asking me? What I’m doing is talking about what happened and frankly I think a lot of people are being hysterical, and not in the good way. Lot of suppositions being bandied about as fact, etc. Sure, kidnapping is a serious crime, but so is revolution! And we’re, or at least I am, not talking about “kidnapping” as in taking someone hostage in exchange for demands. If I was going to occupy a hostile place I’d want some (nonlethal!) way of putting my opponents out of action, too. My feeling is that by and large these people, drunk on their insane narrative of election theft and an extremely unearned feeling of righteousness expected they would show up, Trump would lead them to the capitol and the opposition would mostly just melt away before the power of their cause. My feeling is not that they expected to show up and execute the entirety of the democratic party, although I have no doubt that there were at least a few psychos who would have no real trouble doing that if the mood of the day supported it, which it does not seem to have done. People say stupid shit on the internet all the time, and this crowd attracts more than its fair share of blowhards. In all honesty it seems plain to me that too many people on both sides of this Civil War But This Time as Dumb as Possible watch too damned much television.

Who cares? That’s totally irrelevant. I’m not charging anyone with a crime, nor are you, and in any case it seems like the zip ties weren’t used. As soon as poeple saw them it was immediately “ISIS-style executions!” when it seems clear to me they could have much more (relatively, Jesus Christ) innocuous uses in the context of the day.

After 9/11 happened it took a hot minute for folks jump to the most comforting conclusion they could think of - that our nation was never vulnerable and that it was something only we could have done to ourselves. Not a great take, but there you go.

After people died during an assault on the capitol building targeting the vice president and speaker of the house, people are going to latch on to some comforting lie to soften it for them. “Those people weren’t really going to do anything” is something I expect to be hearing a lot of.
