Yeah I don’t see why there is a need to call this a terrorist act or insurrection or whatever. There were trespass, assault and perhaps manslaughter or murder, normal criminal law can handle that. To say there is an insurrection is to glorify the significance of the mob action. And insurrection is notorious for catching anyone dissenting from the state and refuses to go along with state coercion.

The mob actions at the capital were for a specific purpose, to overturn the results of a lawfully conducted election. They weren’t just there to trespass or to assault someone. They were there as a direct assault on our democratic political process.

I agree with @charmtrap this was in a lot of ways worse than 9/11. It was a direct assault on our democratic process by enemies of democracy within our own country. 9/11 was an attack by an external enemy.

Well for one thing, “terrorism” nowadays is a catch-all term for “bad shit”, and sometimes not even real bad shit. It is probably more of the fault of Assad and CCP that they misued the term so much it is IMO kind of unhelpful to label anything as “terrorism”. Look, I would prefer a more precise term, like coup attempt, but you guys do your own thing.

I don’t really care one way or the other under which legal terms these people are prosecuted, but what happened on January 6th was definitely an insurrection…committed by a mob.

I mean, calling a group of unruly jackasses a “mob” is just fine for general purposes: pouring into a Best Buy on Black Friday, taking the field after a soccer game, looting stores during a blackout, that kinda stuff. But this particular mob was trying to prevent a legally elected government from taking office. That’s an insurrection by any definition of the word.

Motive matters. The motive was the overthrow of the United States of America.
And it matters more because the people that supported it still support it and are in the government.

Put it another way, is the attack on the Capitol similar in kind to, say 9/11 or Oklahoma bombing? I don’t think so. The attack is serious, but IMO is of a different kind to terrorism. It is political violence, a coup attempt, but not as far as terrorism.
