My family’s reaction to people storming the capitol building at Trump’s behest is both predictable and unbelievably frustrating for me. It been 4 years of this and every single time Trump ups the ante they pretend like it’s the very first time he’s done anything remotely questionable, but invariably land on his side of the matter. I’m sure someone could do a case study on how completely detached from reality they are, but they might as well throw in a few winner’s from my wife’s family too, because by God they’ve made it very clear they exist too, and they have no intention of ever going anywhere as long as Democrats sell out the country and prepare a future where home owner occupants are forced to house outsiders at gunpoint… so many people–on both sides of our families–are so far gone I don’t even have the faintest clue what playbook they’re working from any more.
I used to be able to read some Fox News tweet here at Qt3 in the mornings and then hear all that crap regurgitated by my family shortly after. They wouldn’t quote Fox or anything, but they would all be working from the exact same playbook, making the exact same points, and getting upset at the exact same issues. But they weren’t collaborating on this shit, they all got their talking points independently, just from the same sources. And I would always recognize exactly where they’re coming from and know exactly the subtext of whatever point it was they thought they were making. But lately they’re so far off the reservation that I don’t even recognize some of their statements for what they are, or have any idea where they come from. Sometimes it’s not until days (or weeks) later that I can even connect the dots or understand that certain statements made aren’t original thoughts by them, but obviously some brand new concern fed to them by whoeverthehellknows.
Coming back to the capitol riot, getting them to see Trump’s (or the mob’s) culpability is a no go. Even bringing up the 5 dead goes nowhere, because they just turn it around and bring up Benghazi, saying “Oh, is it five? Is five the magic number? Hillary’s okay because she only killed four Americans at Benghazi?” Every single point comes back to Hillary. Every single injustice goes back to hypocrite Dems, who did it all first, and worse, and get off scott free every time. Whether it’s some Clinton journalist shooting himself in the back of the head two times just when he’s about to break some big scandal wide open, or Democrats invading their homes on January 21st to steal all their guns, or the recent Antifa rioters and looters getting a special pass while the Capitol rioters and looters get their names and faces plastered all over the news, the big division for them comes from their own side’s perceived persecution and the unequal ways they’re portrayed (rioter vs demonstrator etc) by the media.
I’m tired. They’re just getting fired up. I want this shit to end already. They see things getting worse, day by day. I want a return to a sense of normalcy. So do they, 1950s normalcy.
I can’t even muster up the will to breakdown all the absurdities of our conversations this week. I’m sure someone out there has heard it all before. I’m just sick of this being the new normal.
