Probably not the right states though? That’s the problem. I won’t be in the camp that says it can never happen, but it’s not a short-term change and the states that are for it are not going to be the ones that resist anyway.

I think it’ll gain more momentum once Trump Republicans realize that they’re not on the same page as “real” Republicans. Hopefully.

This is the time to push for big reforms, and you do that by holding Republicans accountable.
If this means violence by their idiot followers so be it. It will just further discredit the GOP.
And they know this, that’s why the smart ones want this to just die down and go away. They’ve not been so vulnerable for 50 years. It could break the GOP. So let’s all play nice and just go back to business as usual.
I suspect the first time the Popular Vote Compact meets the electoral vote threshold, it will be immediately challenged and honestly likely shot down.
There are good reasons to abolish the electoral college, but you’ll need an amendment to do it. And loudly declaring that it will keep Republicans from ever winning another presidency is not the way to get that amendment.

But it’s not a thing. It’s not a thing that would actually happen.
I mean, look at it… the idea that Texas would join in on it, to destroy the GOP’s power base.
If you got Texas to do that… then you’re gonna win the EC anyway!

Even with the attempts by Trump and his enablers, even with those actively trying to disenfranchise more voters, prevent actual citizens from voting, even attempts to misinform… the Republicans lost both the popular vote and the EC vote. It’s a losers approach to address the EC right now.
Not doing so doesn’t mean we’re not holding Republicans accountable, it means we’re going to focus on holding them accountable and not waste efforts trying to toss the EC. We have other reforms to deal with… remember? Police, judicial system, prisoners that are holding thousands upon thousands of minorities for minor infractions because some white judge couldn’t imagine being black so they get more time than some college rapist.
I mean we have enough reform that will do a ton of good. Also, we have another state we could try to add that isn’t too please with the Republican fuck you attitude, maybe even two states.

I still say, with all honesty, like it’s not BS but imo the only real solution, is deratify several conservative states.
You promise the weakened GOP and their idiot minions that and they’ll stab their mothers to get it.
Give them that and you get everything else - EC, PR, universal HC.

I don’t know. If it is actual state laws enacting the compact in the participating states it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
Forgive us…or else we will release the kraken AGAIN!!!
I’ve long said that what is needed is for the democrats to update the Permanent Apportionment act, and reset the number of representatives by population of the lowest populated state. Do this as part of a fiscal bill to secure elections and it can be passed through reconciliation.
More Representatives makes the EC more like popular vote, and lessens the impact of the Senate EC votes, and could make gerrymandering more difficult, especially if the Voting Rights Act updates are included.

Until this week, I think more than a few people would’ve called Georgia, of all states, a lost cause. Clearly it’s not.
There is no short-cut here. It’s hard work, years of it, generations of it, and you address the problem by actually fixing things like our garbage police and prison systems, voter suppression and making good on the promises made to the groups that support the part.
And yes, you hold them the GOP, the terrorists, and anyone who supported that fail coup accountable. Keep mind, this is in addition to the hard work that was already needed, not instead of. Those other things needed to be fixed before they trashed the Capitol.
Lyin’ Ted running short on friends. Not that he really had any to start with.
Yep, despite all warnings, apparently what the USCP prepared for was a demonstration in which there might be breakaway individuals or even small groups who would be dealt with individually. The idea being (and this is the one point I can understand a little) not wanting to make anyone in this group sympathetic or martyrs to a cause. I mean, I can see that thread of thinking…but then…
…they were told “Not a demonstration; they’re going to be trying to literally stop the certification.” And there were no contingencies in place if the demonstration that executives were planning for was not a demonstration, but a full on riot and insurrection.
My brother went to Costco in the Seattle suburbs near close today. Normally it’s dead at 5:30 PM on a Sunday. He said he’s rarely seen it so packed. There’s no snow in the forecast. Maybe people stocking up due to the crazies threatening shit? The State Legislature assembles for the first time tomorrow, and the MAGAts are threatening to attack. National Guard has deployed.
Or maybe people who would normally have gone to Costco on a Saturday stayed home to watch the Seahawks in the playoffs and went to Costco today.
