I get this, but as I’ve said before, you can’t stop a future Tiberius by killing Tiberius. There will always be people willing to lead these movements (which doesn’t mean we shouldn’t punish Trump). The problem, and the people who might be deterred by strong consequences, isn’t the leaders, it’s the sheep.

Something to look forward to.

That could be done via a censure motion.

I’m guessing one of the effects of this going forward is that the optics of National Guardsmen standing in front of the Capitol will be viewed as preferable to the optics of rioters running through the halls of the Capitol.

They’re angry and hurting.

We really shouldn’t do anything that might upset them. If Trump is allowed to just serve out his term and go home quietly on the 20th, they will all have nothing more to be upset about and we can go back to fighting COVID.

Maybe they just need a hug?

Will no one go to the diners and get to know these people better?

“The Alabama Republican also claimed “it was a black police officer that shot the white female veteran,” referencing Ashli Babbit, a rioter who was shot and killed while attempting to force her way into the House chamber as part of the mob attack.”

Congressman have immunity from arrest for actions they take on the House floor. The ones who rallied the mob, they can be charged for sedition. But I don’t think exercising a legal option they have under statute could or should get them expelled. Exception for Hawley and Cruz, cause well they are assholes and know better.

Clause 1. The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

Uh oh, twitter is in troublllllle

There was allegedly going to be a protest at twitter HQ today but nobody showed up.

I mean. I have now accepted as true that preventing Trump from ever holding office again would require a second Senate vote, after the vote to convict in the first place. But the first vote requires 2/3rds of the Senate, and the second vote only requires a majority. Does anybody really believe he’ll be convicted but not prevented from running again?

Edit: Especially since if he is removed, it will be after his term is expired anyway?

I’m assuming Trump spent the weekend in quiet reflection and now he’s going to firmly concede the election while asking the nation to come together in unity.

Twitter HQ is in the heart of San Francisco. I used to live across the street from that building. Can’t imagine there wouldn’t have been a massive counter protest.

It’s incredible how the old republican party, whether you agreed with their policies or not back in the day, has descended and transformed into a modern criminal version of the Know Nothings.
