Ah ok, thanks for the explanation.

If that’s the case, then it makes sense. You say that’s “quite clear,” but I’ve been following NPR and other outlets all week and haven’t caught wind of this.

The House Republicans have the ability to delay this as they like for possibly a week or even more. Those 75-plus house republicans who voted to object to the election all get to debate on the House floor on impeachment, sometimes twice (if they’re in the committee.)

That would be nice.

That’s a problem. Mitch isn’t bringing the Senate back until the 19th. He’s probably not running for office again. There’s very little blowback for him now.

If they take it up as soon as possible, they’re going to get to set the rules and we’ll get another show trial like we did in December of 2019 and January 2020.

On a call last night, McCarthy told GOP Reps not to attack their colleagues who voted for the impeachment because it might lead to violence against them. Cheney told GOP Reps that they were free to vote their conscience. The House GOP caucus is not telling the GOP reps how to vote on impeachment. There’s a reason for that.

I take your point, but even then the answer was “lots”. Espionage was pretty sophisticated. Thankfully, for about the first 40 years of the Republic, the guys who got elected president were pretty patriotic about making the whole USA thing work as originally conceived.

Sorry, Trig, my post wasn’t meant as a rebuttal to what you said or anything. Your post just triggered that train of thought, of how scary the consequences are of leaving someone like Trump in office just an extra week.

Well, certainly the lame duck period between election and inauguration is too damned long.

I should probably go do some work, but it’s weird to me that there are people angry about the folks who are dealing with this mess and the aftermath. Don’t blame House Democrats in 2020 for having to adhere to an old process to remove a dangerous chief executive. Don’t blame the FBI for picking up the pieces of a mass, violent crime. Both are moving ahead on cleaning this shit up, and appear so far to be doing so resolutely.

Oh, I’m in agreement with you that the whole thing came come together a lot quicker, and a lot more dangerously and violently for sure.

Surely Trump will have learned his lesson. Every President gets one free pass for fomenting insurrection, right? I mean, he probably just didn’t know it was bad, he’s a pure innocent creature after all.

The authorities have the power to shut down DC and protect the capital in the event of a perceived threat. The problem with the 6th was not a lack of force or security, but a combination of ineptitude and (probably) malice at the leadership level.

And so we install some new metal detectors. They’ll probably just Sept 11th this thing and use it as an excuse to bring undue reactions to actual peaceful demonstrations.

Re: the mask mandate: I look forward to all of the MAGA’s in the house doing big show-protests of not wearing a mask. That will be fun.

In the UK, the gap between the election and the new government taking control is…
ZERO.
The new prime minister will actually move in to number 10 downing street that night in some cases. And the old prime minister is very definitely kicked right out of the building the minute the vote is clear.
Its awesome.
Frankly its completely baffling why the US has such a long period. It has always seems absolutely ripe for abuse, and…now it has been.

Both that, and the frankly nuts pardon system really need fixing. IMHO the US has FAR too romantic a view of the constitution, and the assumption that its fit for 2020. Stuff changes, and you need a government system that changes with the times. A bunch of dudes with wigs and muskets are not the final word on government :D

Could not agree more.

Censure. Like Trump gives a single fuck about a toothless censure especially on his way out.

Censure is what McCarthy wants, because he is a simpering gimp. No one else is interested in it. Not even Mitch.

Normal people would say that being impeached once already is more than a censure vote… and if Trump didn’t learn anything from that, then censuring him again is obviously, OBVIOUSLY, pointless.

Gold medal effort.

Trump is speaking now.

Big beautiful wall.

Free speech is under assault.

He’s not afraid of the 25th but Biden should be.

Now addressing the events of last week.

Called the mob a mob. That’s good at least.

Now taking credit for the vaccine.

Lots of taking credit for the vaccine.

“Now is the time to heal”

Talking about law and order and praising law enforcement. He said something about talking about what we need to do now to move forward, but then started rambling about law enforcement.

Now he’s talking about how the border patrol said “we don’t need a wall, we need drones” but he contradicted them and gave them a wall instead.

Going on about border security now and how he took on the cartels.

(got pulled into a work meeting and stopped listening)
