It’s true that having some Rs in the House vote for impeachment will take away the argument some R Senators used last time to vote against conviction – because it wasn’t “bipartisan”. Which means this time they’ll have to find a different excuse to vote against conviction.

Two.

Yeah, it all matters. MAGA nutters will just call them RINOs, but the average person cares about optics and a bi-partisan impeachment is the real deal.

The R senators who don’t want to impeach will say something about it being unneccessary since Trump leaves office in days anyway. Let the healing begin!

Let the arrests begin.

We’re pleased to let others do the job we all should be doing.

After Adam Kinzinger’s statement last week and after a quick look at his twitter history in the week since, I’d have to imagine he’ll vote for impeachment as well.

I feel like the GOP is looking at impeachment as a way to sever themselves from Trump, and say they were never really about all that crap anyway.

This whole ‘it’s on the Dems to make things right for GOP mistakes’ thing reminds me of when Cheney shot someone while hunting and then made that person apologize on TV for getting shot. Very neo-conservative of them, but right on schedule as soon as Dems actually regain the power to make changes. ‘Fix the debt we ran up, unite the country we divided, and how about some ice cream?’

Dems are buying. Right?

Certainly seems to be McConnell’s motive here.

But if it leads to 67 senate votes, as the immortal political theorist Tommy Lee Jones said in The Fugitive: “I don’t care.”

I’d be shocked if he didn’t vote to impeach.

McConnell knows that Trump is going to dog the Republican party for four years with hints and threats at a 2024 run, and he will command all the attention during that time as well. Meanwhile he’s going to poison the well for 2022 and then again for down-ballot races in 2024.

The only hope is attempting to sever him from the party. It’s a bold, extremely risky move, but perhaps McConnell sees it as the only chance of the Republican party he envisions surviving.

So same as it ever was but no Trump.

If the GOP crawls out from the septic pit of hypocrisy, I hope it’s by electing people like Kinzinger.
