My head is going to explode. The right-wing nuts at my local paper are now commenting on the insurrection saying that it’s really the fault of liberals for not condemning BLM protests, that it set the scene for the attack on the capitol. That’s the narrative now I’m seeing. Whataboutism.

These people will never accept any responsibility for their beliefs or entertain any possibility that their beliefs may be wrong. There is no talking to them.

I have not talked to my friend of 20+ years since Jan 6. He wrote some quip about how it’s funny liberals are now supporting police response. I told him to fuck off with his both-sideism. I started feeling a little guilty yesterday. Maybe I should not be so hard. He’s just a Sheldon contrarian.

I feel a little rude ignoring him and realized my motivation is petty - I am doing some sort of passive-aggressive message to tell him he is a fucking moron.

He’s a lawyer and a good chess player. He’s the dumbest smart guy I know. He was in my D&D group. I have known him for a long, long time. The thing is you can never, ever EVER win an argument against him because he fights super dirty - he will shift topics if he’s losing, and worse, gish gallop, the entire playbook. There are times that after 5 hours of arguing he will turn around and claim his position has been the one he argued against in the very start.

If you can picture that type of person. I suspect he has some weak narcissistic qualities and a deep innate resentment against being bullied. Demonstrating his intellect to everyone is how he copes.

The last year because of pandemic we get to talk more and I realized I can just pretend he’s right and stroke his ego. Then he’s fine. It’s kinda like saying the people in your life have issues and you just have to learn how to manage them. After all, after hours of arguing what do I even win. It’s not like there’s an audience to even give me likes or reddit points,

Also I think it may be impossible to ever achieve agreement. He watches Shapiro. He uses terms like cancel culture. He thinks the Christians are an oppressed group. The only time he thinks racism is real is if someone directly says “Ching chong” or the N word. He’s that type.

I know. I felt my blood pressure rising when I was reading the string of posts. It’s interesting because for at least the first few days almost no conservatives posted messages. They didn’t know how to respond when their own people attacked our Capitol at the behest of the president they love.

But now they have their marching orders, I guess. It’s the fault of liberals for tolerating BLM protests. BLM and the insurrection are completely equivalent. They have their story now and they are sticking to it.

It’s this shit that makes it feel so hopeless. Truly nothing matters. Our Capitol gets attacked by the Right. The Right posted all kinds of messages about killing people. Eh, so what, doesn’t matter.
