I really think that there’s a 50/50 shot that McConnell decides to actually vote yes to remove and bar trump. Not because of any moral grounds, but because Trump has shown that he is only interested in hoovering up as much money from Republican donors as possible and dumping it into his pockets which is at odds with McConnell’s desire to be the Senate Majority leader again. Had Trump actually supported the GA runoff and Purdue had held on to his seat I think McConnell would vote no.
Would not surprise me at all. He is a master at playing the cards at his disposal, and looking over his shoulder, I think that this would be his smarter play. Although I am surprised he said this (quoted in multiple outlets) prior to Trump’s final pardon list, which is likely to be outrageous enough to provide cover.
But I’m thinking McConnell will want to match Biden’s unity imaging, no matter how much he actually intends to kneecap Biden. And in terms of policy, this is a cheap way to indicate he is not playing scorched earth. And I have little doubt that he wants to smack down the Trump wing of the party. Issues of right and wrong aside, if you attack the king, you better kill the king, and McConnell definitely lined up against Trump leading up to Jan 6.
And, no matter how objectionable he is on a lot of issues, he is probably sincerely outraged by a physical attack on his institution.
(I also have a theory that he will not, in fact, try to kneecap Biden. At least not initially. Biden is centrist enough that I suspect he will try to deal with Biden, as long as Biden is willing to give in on the issues most important to McConnell. From what I have read, McConnell always had it in for Obama on a personal level, but not regarding Biden.)
We haven’t even gotten to federal charges in all of this, but the DC prosecutor isn’t waiting around to charge some bigboy crimes in District Court.
I think McConnell sounds like a guy who wants to drive a stake through Trump’s heart. He wants him nowhere near the 2024 nomination and he wants his appeal to the base largely neutralized by that.
Does that mean there are the votes to convict? I dunno, it is McConnell after all.
