I think a thing to consider to is that you’re supposed to trust and believe in the president and that’s a trait many of these people have.

Imagine an argument between two people you never have met before. At some point in the argument, one calls the other a liar and the accused denies it. Without access to corroborating information, you’re to pick a side - who is lying, the accuser or the accused? Now what if the accused is someone you trust (or supposed to trust), maybe someone who looks like you, who you feel is an honest tell-it-like-it-is person? At some point you might make a decision that everything the accuser says, and every evidence the accuser presents, is a lie. You’re now decided, your mind is made up and there is no unmaking it.

I think that’s where we are with a lot of these people and it’s a scary place. They’ve become convinced that we’re the liars, we’re the ones that have stolen democracy, that we are the Nazis of the 30s. It’s a bizarro-world and the only thing you need to gain admittance is believe in what you’re supposed to. Charging trump isn’t going to change their minds. I fear at this point, even Trump recanting won’t change their minds (which i think is both something that must happen and that will not happen).

I was listening to The Daily podcast from the NYT of a couple of days ago: the episode is titled “What kind of message is that?” They interview a bunch of Trump supporters and man, some of these people believe in some kooky stuff. One guy actually said that China had troops ready to invade the US to prevent Trump from taking office. Of course it fits perfectly with observable facts in their minds because since Biden is now “installed” no Chinese invasion was necessary. Xi’s plan is unfolding perfectly! :rolleyes:

That’s the least kooky thing I’ve heard from these people. The weirdest and most pervasive rumor pre-inauguration was the one about the US military having raided some office in Germany to confiscate servers and that Gina Haspel was actually killed in the operation.

I think all the racists voted for trump. I don’t think everyone that voted for trump is a racist. If the racists were the only factor, Obama would have never been elected in the first place.

Oh, to be fair, a minor sliver of them didn’t trust him because he was a Democrat. In either case, the implication that Republicans of a certain are predisposed to respect and trust a president sight unseen is clearly nonsense.

But for them, the racism was not a deal breaker, and voting with the racists was not a deal breaker. Like my cousin, who I think was indoctrinated by talk radio, had convinced himself that he was voting for Trump because he was a smart businessman and Hillary was a liar.
