Yes, namely federal and state. With very different rules regarding pre-trial custody.

It’s actually less bad than I’ve thought for many years. To an extent there IS a repository of gun ownership, it’s just hard to use and easy to dodge repercussions.

Purchases require NICS checks, which are destroyed after 24 hours. But, dealers maintain 20 years of records for purchases, including the purchaser, so with a warrant authorities can get the name of who bought a crime gun.

Unfortunately there are LOTS of caveats that make it less good. Multiple layers of ownership have to be deciphered (manufacturer/importer/wholesaler/distributor) which takes lots of time in what is probably a time-sensitive investigation, and then at the end the person can just say “I lost/sold it” and if there’s no other evidence, police are done.

Usual answers are close the private seller loophole and consolidate information into a federal database, both of which are political nukes.

Annnd its gone (at least from paypal)

People don’t know what being racist is.

Being racist = being bad.

They are not bad people, therefore they are not racists.

Yesterday I was angry because a stupid person was angry at me because he repeatedly used a racial epithet for hispanics (you know the one) and argued it was not racist. I know you’re not supposed to be angry at random people on the internet because you’re never gonna change them, etc etc but man, people are trash.

That’s the thing though… they need to go through the difficult process of introspection, and realize that these beliefs are in fact racist, and that harboring them is in fact making them into bad people.

And that’s why they should change… because they don’t want to be bad people.

I think most, if not all, of my evolution as a person has involved that process… realizing that I believed things which were wrong and/or bad, and then changing my view because I didn’t want to be wrong/bad.

In my case I think he got away with it because he was not 1) modded down 2) shouted down by the rest of the audience. They tacitly accepted his behavior as acceptable and yell out “no politics!!!”

Absolutely! If more people were willing to do do, it would be such a blessing.

I’ve always said I like to have my beliefs challenged. It’s important to stop and ask why you believe certain things and whether those beliefs are justified/good/etc. then your beliefs become stronger/better justified or they change. It’s an iterative process.

The problem is that our schools don’t emphasize teaching children how to think anymore and so many people in the world no longer have the willingness or the capacity to engage in the kind of discussion that encourages this sort of growth. Instead, we get tribalism and people acting like they are under attack if someone doesn’t share their beliefs.

Yes, it’s essential, but also very difficult. It’s really an unfortunate quirk of human psychology that we become so emotionally invested in our beliefs and worldviews. Overcoming that requires not only practice/training but in some cases real courage.

Actually her story is that she was invited on the plane by a random “cute” guy on facebook. But he ended hooking up with the other blonde.

It’s the daily mail so I now doubt the existence of Jenna Ryan, but anyway here’s a litany of bad life decisions.

“I swear your honor, it was a blind date! One second we’re having brunch on the National Mall and the we were looking for a place to make-out and I’m stepping over a capitol police officer and walking into Nancy Pelosi’s office. No one said we couldn’t be in there!”

I’d only take issue with the “anymore”, I don’t think this kind of thing was ever taught, at scale, outside of maybe the elite universities, where it still very much is. (With the disclaimer that of course you can go through Harvard and avoid any given part of a “complete” education (such as critical thinking) but again that was always the case.)

Well OK then. I suppose in her defense the other blonde lady is much more attractive (though likely no less crazy) so in her despair at being passed over for the cuter girl (Again? Why does this always happen to me?!) her judgement became temporarily impaired and she simply found herself caught up in the crowd. Before she could realize the possible consequences of her actions she was inside the Capitol building hoping maybe she would meet a hot Capitol police officer or even get close to that sexy Texas man-muffin Senator Ted Cruz. She was just a lonely heart looking for love in all the wrong places your honor! We’ve all been there!

These folks are fucked.

QAnon Shaman turns on Trump

Watkins is representing perhaps the most recognizable figure from the unrest - Jacob Chansley, 33, also known as the ‘Qanon Shaman’.

“Let’s roll the tape. Let’s roll the months of lies, and misrepresentations and horrific innuendo and hyperbolic speech by our president designed to inflame, enrage, motivate,” said Watkins. " What’s really curious is the reality that our president, as a matter of public record, invited these individuals, as President, to walk down to the capitol with him."

I’m not talking about university, but grade school. Over the last twenty-five to thirty years, especially (in the US), the focus has almost entirely shifted to regurgitating facts on standardized tests. Less reason, less analysis, less asking or understanding “why?”

I guess I’m just doubtful that it was the case 25 years ago, outside of the privileged class where it still is being taught.

This dude is bipolar, and I wish he had found more constructive outlets for his mania before latching on to this one.

It seems increasingly possible that Hawley jumped the shark.

Of course the problem is that Senate Republicans are wildly unlikely to expel him, and he isn’t up for re-election for 4 more years.

The one that is essentially an abbreviation of “hispanic?” I mean holy shit, that’s been offensive for decades and from its birth.

Says every grumpy old person ever.
