I agree. If it had been a BLM rally and there were rumors they’d march on the Capitol builing, there would have been 10 times the police there and at a minimum a lot of broken heads.

And let’s not forget. BLM is protesting because the black community is being slaughtered by police and there are no consequences for that. These protests stormed the Capitol because more people voted for the guy they didn’t like than the one they did.

The comparisons aren’t great. One is literally life and death, the right to be free and equal, to stop being the target of everyone else’s misery. The other is almost entirely white people pissed off at losing or running around with some weirdo conspiracy in their head.

The Capitol Rioters Aren’t Like Other Extremists

Unlike the stereotypical extremist, many of the alleged participants in the Capitol riot have a lot to lose. They work as CEOs, shop owners, doctors, lawyers, IT specialists, and accountants. Strikingly, court documents indicate that only 9 percent are unemployed. Of the earlier far-right-extremist suspects we studied, 61 percent were under 35, 25 percent were unemployed, and almost none worked in white-collar occupations.

Some of the standard methods of countering violent extremism—such as promoting employment or waiting patiently for participants to mellow with age—probably won’t mollify middle-aged, middle-class insurrectionists. And simply targeting better-established far-right organizations will not prevent people like the Capitol rioters from trying to exercise power by force.

Maybe the best approach is going to be a harsh punitive one. I suspect most of these folks think they have nothing to lose, or are so far gone that nothing will sway them. In either case, they need to be locked up for a long time if not forever , either to make an example or because they are that dangerous.
