Welcome to the Fyre Festival Trump edition!
I think a harsh, punitive approach is the correct one. I don’t think these people thought/think they have nothing to lose as it seems like many of them have a lot to lose. I think the problem is that most didn’t think that they would lose anything given white privilege, etc. Harsh punishment might be the way to actually make them realize that insurrection does carry real, material risks. That is probably the best way to dissuade this in the future as most of them aren’t the type to knowingly put their lives or livelihood on the line. This is different than the out of work or low prospect white 20/30-somethings that seem to more classically comprise right wing militias.

But they all believe that they will suffer no consequences for their crimes. They are privilege made manifest.
I don’t disagree, but it’s a futile topic to debate. The criminal justice system we have is all we can use to prosecute the people involved. Currently there are no crimes or sentencing rules that include modifiers for being a privileged jerk, though I would support laws enacting such in the future. So at the end of the day we are going to see a wave of people get misdemeanor convictions with no more than a short jail stay and a fine plus probation, plus a few people get higher profile felony trials. Those few latter folks, the ones that DOJ wants to make examples of, will get some nasty outcomes. But most involved folks will be back to their normal lives pretty quick.
I can’t believe the US penal system can’t deal with something like this, throw the book at them, get them judged by 12 of their peers, 12 people from DC for instance where they commited the crime, should end up with people in jail, no?

THere’s all sorts of charges you could pile on, insurrection is 20 years on its own, sedition is 10 years, maybe accessory to attempted murder of a member of Congress.
They apparently tacked on at least one Felony Charge, so Mexico ain’t paying for her bail!
My guess is her ridiculous request to be allowed to leave the country prompted the DOJ to charge her with a felony. It’s a really bad look to allow an insurrectionist who stormed into our Capitol building leave the country for a vacation.

AUSA’s are very risk averse. They were probably waiting for a couple of pieces of evidence to be confirmed and her talking about going to Mexico motivated them to focus on getting their ducks in a row.

I guess this is the thread for lawsuits about the election since it’s all connected. Or I’ve forgotten another thread, which is entirely possible.

When you are a garbage person and a garbage lawyer like Rudy, who is your lawyer? It’s like garbage-ception: WE HAVE TO GO DEEPER.
God I hope they don’t settle and force these twits to testify in court.
And that felony apparently has a guideline sentence that’s at least a wee bit more than a slap on the wrist. Assuming no major downward deviations.
Do not attempt the calculation yourself - that way lies SAN loss.
Every time you comment about someone being incarcerated you make a joke about prison rape. It’s never funny.
Found out yesterday that one of the guys in my graduating class back in St. Louis was arrested by the FBI for taking part in this. 2 misdemeanor, 1 felony charge.
If you’ve seen the picture of someone holding what looks to be part of a broken sign to Pelosi’s office, he’s the dude in the St. Louis Blues knit cap to his left (picture right). I didn’t really know him, just recognized the name, but still - freaks me out a little.
Thank you for calling this out. I need to be better about calling it out, too.
Must have been a very amicable split.
