“But it was just free expression!”
Good. Perhaps this guy’s fate will serve to encourager les autres in Voltaire’s words.
@Alistair You’re saying that he wasn’t sentenced? Or that the best plea bargain he could get wasn’t that?

Good! So glad to see real charges and a real sentence, not something like 8 months probation, as the first precedent for these people.
This seems less than an ideal thing to find in the officer corps.
(Yes, it’s just one guy.)

Dispatches from the Leopards Eating Faces Party
Once upon a time Gohmert was the most extreme Republican in the House. Maybe he’s trying to take that mantle back.
The Tyler Republican and former judge pointed to some defendants being held for weeks in jail in Washington awaiting trial, calling them “political prisoners held hostage by their own government.”
“You could call it a conspiracy because these people are working to silence anybody who supported Donald Trump,” Gohmert said, referring to the Justice Department and federal judges who have denied bail for some defendants and arguing they should have been let out of jail.
“The overwhelming number of people caught up in this ‘unprecedented’ investigation … they’re actually nonviolent, peaceful Americans,” Gohmert said. “Their only crime was supporting Donald Trump and concern about the fraud Democrats have been telling us about in elections for many years.”

(He’s not wrong, either. trump got 74 million votes. Can’t tell me that’s because of good governance and policy.)
I wish people would realize this.
Tons of people realize this. Wilson is a moron in addition to being a racist, a homophobe, and an anti-Semite.

Wilson is better at politics than you are.
Which is why he is asking to sleep on my couch, after fleeing the burning remains of his own party. /s
Here, look at the tweets:
“They can’t possibly look inside the reality of that day and maintain the Big Lie. They can’t admit to the clear causality of Trump unleashing his mob. It opens them to personal, moral, and political liability for that day.”
It’s like he missed out on the second impeachment trial and everything that has happened in the last 4 months. There’s a reason that it’s called “the Big Lie”. It’s because it’s a “Big Lie” maintained in the face of all evidence to the contrary.
Here, if you want to continue to be grifted by these people, that’s fine, it’s your nature as a conservative and it’s a free country and I can’t stop you. But please don’t drag the rest of us into it!
I don’t know if enough people realize this. There are people that argue that we should take what we can get, and just accept that we will lose the next primary because that is how things go. That there is no use pushing people like Joe Manchin, and we should be happy with small steps.
As much as I don’t agree with the more extreme parts of the progressive party on many issues, I do think we need to be pushing fair and protected elections.
One way to do that, in my opinion, is the let the Extreme left go wild and push the Overton Window as far left as possible. Not because I agree with them, but it makes it much easier for Joe Manchin and others to vote for progressive policies that fall short, and still argue that they moderates.
I don’t believe the problem is they don’t “grasp” the concept, they simply don’t “reach” for it - for the person who generally gravitates to Democratic party ideals, the desire to act as if everything is a zero-sum game isn’t part of their DNA, their character, their thinking.

You all act like there’s some magical thing Biden could say to get Manchin to change his mind. There isn’t. Manchin won’t, so the filibuster stays, so voting reform is dead.
There’s nothing anybody can do about it except Manchin. And he won’t.
And it is probably the core value of the GOP currently. And I should probably use strikethrough on that “probably”…

Who is letting who do what? There’s no Democratic party dictator directing the actions of leftists and moderates to achieve some desired end. No one is holding the Extreme Left’s (i.e. the people who want universal healthcare and think climate change is the apocalyptic threat it is) leash. There’s just a bunch of people doing what they think is best.
Republicans are the beneficiaries of a happy accident: that the geographical distribution of their constituencies is such that they can seize an outsized portion of power as long as they lack any scruples or concern for democracy. Wilson played a major role in the machine that both erased the last vestiges of scruple and learned how to exert maximum leverage to obtain minority influence. He’s definitely really good at ratfucking. Whether than means he’s “better at politics” is an open question. The reason Democrats cling to principle and promote policy is because that’s what governance looks like. If politics is merely the acquisition of power, then you get Trump, which thanks much Rick fucking Wilson for that.
