I’ve had contempt of Congress for a long time, can I help?

The loon was one of the 11 Senators absent, so one “Democrat” didn’t vote for it.

Well there is strong circumstantial evidence that several members of the GOP were active participants in planning and feeding information to the rioters. MTG, among several other worms. And slapping them with federal crimes would be a worthy goal.

It absolutely requires subpoenaing people like McCarthy of you want to force him to testify. Otherwise he can just refuse to testify.

Oh no disagreement here, but wouldn’t that be the purview of the FBI as the agency investigating the crimes? I don’t think congressional hearings or special commissions are required to do that are they?

So, do something about it Manchin!

You want to get them to spill on camera.

Just form your own partisan commitee and subpoena him that way? There’s no rule saying the House can’t subpoena another House member.

As for Manchin, the Dems would need 5 more votes, and the loon is unreliable. Manchin at least voted right here.

Would the fact that people were absent for the vote lower the required number of votes for cloture? Like, 60% of 90 is only 54.

I believe not

The rule is that you need three-fifths of the full Senate to get cloture. That is why one of the proposed reforms is requiring 40 votes to block cloture, rather than 60 to end debate.

I hate it when I accidentally three-fifths of the full Senate.

It was 54 to 35 and the 35 won.

Gentlemen, our democracy isn’t dying, it’s already dead.

And at minimum the majority should pass that next week (and I hope it would be 41 votes to block cloture, right?). Manchin and Sinema can’t object that it’s “ending the filibuster” to do so.

I have had to argue about vote counts on FB, so here are the official votes for reference:

https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=117&session=1&vote=00218

Vote Counts:

YEAs: 54 (2 Ind, 6 R, 46 D)
NAYs: 35 (35 R)
Not Voting: 11 (8 R, 2 D)

We give the GOP shit for voting against this, but I really want to hear WTF was going on with Murray and Sinema.

The expected vote totals were known days ahead I think. It would have been nice to have a 100% D vote as a statement, but I don’t specifically resent the 2 missing. Both have spoken in support and stated they would have voted Yes if present.

This, plus another $5, will get those Senators a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

I don’t care if the totals were known ahead of time, missing the vote is inexcusable.

First of all, it’s their fucking job. That’s what they do. They vote on things. Do your fucking job.

Second, we’re talking about an insurrection where senators and representatives may have come close to being murdered or at least taken hostage for not going along with overturning a legitimate election. And you don’t show up for a vote like THAT? Are you kidding me?

The minimum wage thing was one thing, that was DOA. But symbolism matters a lot here. Standing up and demanding a commission needs to happen and those opposing it are dangerous. Those who couldn’t be bothered to show up, do their job, and be on the right side of history are disgusting.

Now don’t be silly, you wouldn’t want to suggest that this woman is unprofessional would you?
