I enjoy invoking other non-violent protests to justify inaction here, and look forward to when they cite this as a justification for draconian measures on the next non-violent BLM protest.

In case we might have forgotten the coup attempt is happening during a pandemic, the inevitable has already happened.
Watching that, at least two of the CP officers did start swinging right after the mob pushed the barriers back into them (and crushed an officer against the railings on the stairs while knocking another one down). The problem I see in that video, which is the same problem we saw the entire time, is that there are only 7 officers, none in riot gear, guarding what appears to be the main walkway barricades from the street up to the front of the capital. It does appear that 4-5 officers arrive as backup fairly quickly, but you can probably assume they simply ran over from similar barricades a few yards away, leaving those access points less defended in the process. There are no officers to be seen in the background on the access path to the building, no officers on horseback, none in riot gear, and no vehicles or other support, just a handful of CP officers in everyday uniforms and jackets to defend against a mob of hundreds of Trump supporters. It only takes the mob 90 seconds to overwhelm those officers and chase them as they flee back towards the steps of the capital.
Because this protest was predominately white people protesting in support of Trump, the powers that be decided it wasn’t going to be a big deal (certainly not like those nasty BLM people with their Antifa allies!) and didn’t secure anything properly. As a result, officers got injured, a woman is dead (which while justifiable, things should never have gotten far enough for it to happen) and our nation’s capital was breeched. Heads should roll, and the inauguration should look like a goddamn military occupation in comparison.

If had control of a vast and powerful government conspiracy the first thing I’d do is create a system to identify people who make hot take/rant videos while driving and secretly sterilize them. It may not be too late for the next generation.
This is so completely infuriating - the one time a show of force is genuinely needed and the racist fucking authorities decide to take a holiday. The whole narrative today could be different if these chucklefuck insurrectionists had been put down hard the way they richly deserved.

I am lucky enough to have grown up in the same neighborhood as Brian. He worked as a staffer for a Republican senator in the 1990s, and has, like a lot of Republicans in the 1990s, become a full-on Democrat since.
