Turkey's descent into authoritarianism

Yeah, D&D taught me that, then the army made it really stick.

Look at you with all your fancy pants “serving the country” and what not! What, do you want a medal or something!?

I mean, if you deserve one maybe we could look into it. :P

Just broadcasting my stupidity as penance.

who could have anticipated such a turnaround

Apparently Turkey gets to decide what’s talked about in America now.

I am one of the least jingoistic, least free-speech-maximalist Americans you are likely to find. And yet, this shit and the recent (ongoing, really, because woof) shit with China make me so proud to live somewhere where authoritarian assholes at least get checked from time to time.

All the recounting is done in Turkey’s Mayoral election races, and the AKP is still losing in both Ankara and Istanbul. I think they have certified the winner in the capital, but the govt can’t stand losing Istanbul, so they are trying to force the election commission into the extraordinary step of re-doing the vote for the whole city.

Republicans are doing their best to make sure this doesn’t happen anymore here.

and, they have ordered a re-vote, just for the one race the opposition won in Istanbul

The youths don’t know what’s good for them. That’s why Turkey needs Erdogan.

holy fucking shit

Voting weekend again in Istanbul. Let’s see if the opposition party candidate is allowed to hold a lead this time.

Seems like it. At least Erdogan’s candidate has admitted defeat.

Waiting to hear a WH response to this, assuming we had someone besides a translator in the room for these conversations

It seems like Turkey is starting to lose their patience with housing the millions of Syrian refugees. There have been a couple of mob incidents in big cities where the new Syrian communities are attacked by crowds blaming them for some incident like a theft or a relationship gone wrong. Both the ruling and opposition parties are showing intolerance, which is understandable based on the huge numbers of refugees they have hosted for so long. But they aren’t moving fast towards assimilation, and nobody is close to going home either, Turkey is actually still fighting in Syria and making more refugees.

Turkey is insisting they will have the Russian S400 missile and radars installed, and also continue in the F-35 program with us. This isn’t “unwittingly”.
