Ok, TV Guide’s list can be found here http://www.tvguide.com/50th/features/020729a.asp, it’s been discussed a lot on by the local media. The general consensus seems to be that they got the top 2 right but some of the newer 'toons shouldn’t have ranked so high. I just think it’s a travesty that Daffy Duck only rang in at 14, he should be sharing top billing with Bugs. Ah well, at least he blew Donald Duck out of the water, so to speak.
Yikes. Lists are by their very nature open to dispute, especially when you stretch it to 50, but this one really bites.
Well, they got no. 1 right, and I’ll concede on no. 2 as well. Rocky and Bullwinkle was a great show, but as characters do they stack up? I’d stick Fred and Barney at three. But the top five or six are solid. After that the list goes to hell.
I don’t see why Bart and Lisa Simpson are paired like that, and below Cartman for Walt’s sake! I have no idea who Angelica Pickles is, and SquareBob is new to me. How did Heckle and Jeckle beat Yogi Bear by 11 spots? Pikachu is a better character than Mickey Mouse? Topcat?!?! This must be a joke of some kind.
Spongebob Squarepants at #9 invalidates the entire poll for me.
That list is dismal. Pikachu at 15 ahead of Yogi Bear and Wile E. Coyote, among others? And why are Bart and Lisa Simpson listed together? Just shows you how stupid lists are.
Worst. List. … ah, fuck it.
Brak, Moltar and Zorak are better than Space Ghost, and they didn’t even place.
Top 50 according to THE SQUIRRELS IN MY HEAD!!!
You know, it’s not difficult to envision the “editorial staff” of TV Guide as squirrels in someone’s head.
Ssssh. I’m watching the Hardcore Nut channel. Go on…show us some macadamia. Oooh, Macadamia!
Josie and The Puppycats were a 1 season failed series…and they’re in the top 50?
Beyond the idea of hot chicks dressed as cats, the show and characters were miserable.
And I have to wonder which Space Ghost they mean. The original series or Coast to Coast? If it’s the latter, I agree with him being listed. (er, I just read their expanded commentary. Apparently they consider today’s Space Ghost and the 1960’s Space Ghost to be the same character. ummm, ok)
Completely agree.
Questions, comments:
- Where are “Pussyfoot and Marc Anthony” from the greatest single cartoon ever created, Chuck Jones’ “Feed The Kitty”?
- #2 Should just simple be “The Simpsons”. There are so many great characters. Where Monty Burns or Tro Mcclure if you are going to single them out?
- Angelica Pickels is from “Rugrats”. She is one those “adult-like children” that a huge portion of the population seem to really love, but I can’t stand.
- While I think “Beavis And butthead” should be on the list, “Hank Hill” is much better character and should be included somewhere. Props for adding Bobby though.
- I love The Powerpuff Girls", but they are too high. Plus, They need to have Mojo Jojo and the Gange Green Gang along with them.
- Thank God Chuck Jones’ most annoying creation, that WB frog, is no where to be found.
- Umm, Foghorn Leghorn rules.
Any cartoon character that has not been around for at least 10 years should automatically be invalidated. Had this ranking been done 15-20 years ago, you’d also see He-Man, Optimus Prime and G.I. Joe.
Daffy Duck should be in the top 10. I am surprised to see Underdog though, didn’t think anybody still remembered him.
I looked at the list again. Ghostbusters should be included too. That was one of the better cartoons. Decent jokes, good action, some good writing.
I always thought of myself as a cartoon buff. But who in the hell is Gerald Mcboing-boing?
Beavis and Butthead, and Ren and Stimpy were fads. They should be towards the bottom (if listed at all). Also, I agree that Daffy should be closer to the top (Another example of “The Man” tryin’ to keep the black duck down.)
McBoing-Boing is from Dr. Suess
Ghostbusters should be included too.
If you’re going to throw that ephemeral piece of crap in there, why not go ahead and toss in Ray Parker, Jr. while you’re at it?
Lords of Light!!! Demon Dogs!!!
Where are Thundarr the Barbarian, Princess Azriel (?), and Uggla the Mok?
And who can forget Uni from the short-lived and wonderful (at least when I was young it was) D&D toon. I wish the Cartoon Network would re-run those!!!
I’d have included Animaniacs and excluded, er, anyone from King of the Hill. Really, though, it seems as though the piece veered wildly. Were these cartoon greats or TV cartoon greats? I mean, no one is a bigger duck fan than I, but even I wouldn’t have included Donald Duck whose appearances on screen have long since been overshadowed by his intelligible ones in print. Carl Barks should be rolling in his grave.

Where’s Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarves?
