Ubuntu Edge phone - $32 million Indiegogo

I have seen a lot of bad objections to this thing, but this is certainly the worst.

I know, but basically you have the people running Ubuntu wanting to become ‘Apple’(or MS) and all the associated stuff that goes with that. My disinterest in the project is mostly from the fact Ubuntu WAS a really awesome desktop alternative for a while, but has obviously been directed towards this future where ethically i can no longer choose to use it. Now it will be about child/near slave labour, toxic work conditions (for profits) and all the other stuff that a i-phone/Samsung tablet is really about.

The EU parliament are pinko-commies? (No, they actually DID declare it a right)

Anyway, lol@ the price rises.

Linux is free if your time is worth nothing.

Looking at my paycheck from work, it appears that my time IS worth nothing! TO UBUNTU!

Most sysadmins would be very surprised to hear that.

It’s not apples to apples. Linux may be fine for servers, backends and networking equipment but crowdfunding a smartphone is meant to the smartphone equivalent of a desktop device–something usable (eventually) by the masses.

Remind us how successful Linux is on the desktop.

Yeah, there’s no way Linux could be broadly popular on a phone.

… is a thing you might say if you’ve been sleeping the last five years.

C’mon. Android isn’t Linux and iOS isn’t OS X. Windows isn’t Windows Phone.

Android absolutely is. If you mean that it doesn’t run X and run GTK apps and all that, well, neither is Ubuntu’s phone OS. It has an Ubuntu SDK that’s based on HTML5 or a Javascript markup thing (QML). The Ubuntu SDK is probably closer to traditional desktop Linux stuff, and it’ll be easier to port traditional apps to it (if nothing else, it can run C/C++ backend code, so it’s just the UI that’d need to be ported), but fundamentally Android and Ubuntu are doing the same thing – taking a Linux base, and building a new mobile-centric UI on top of that.
