UFOs are scouting our nuclear weapons stockpile

It’s ridiculous that you’re suggesting there are no mice anywhere in the universe.

H.

It’s the swiss.
They don’t want nuclear war, because their neutrality won’t mean shit then, and there will be nobody to sell chocolate too.
Don’t believe all this crap about cuckoo clocks and bank accounts, those guys are obviously super-technologically advanced. They have spaceships they use to stop russia and the US nuking each other.
Seriously, it’s the swiss.

When serving in the Navy, one of my coworkers related a story of a ball of light that followed the ship he was on, which was a nuclear capable destroyer or cruiser, I wish I remember which one, though it would have been in the mid 90’s. I think I also remember reading about similar sightings near civilian nuclear reactors at times.

I think if anything, it’s worth investigating. Perhaps there is even an environmental issue that causes these balls of light and it’s something we should have been paying attention to all along.

You fail to make huge leaps to explain the situation. You must be delusional.

Hehe. I think that’s the problem with “UFO research” and situations like this in the first place. There is no middle ground it seems. Either you are knee deep in it, or you have to shun all of it as mass-hysteria. Whatever it takes to get a true X-Com remake made though … I’m all for it.

Resurrecting for Skipper

Last year the Pentagon released information on UFOs per Harry Reid’s request. Included was an incident in 2004 where a Navy carrier group off of California encountered something. The Aegis escort had been detecting something weird on radar for a few days. They finally had twos F18s in the air and vectored in an intercept. The pilots saw it, and their description of it was unworldly. It was whitish oval object, the size of a large airliner, hovering right above the water, churning it up, and then it accelerated and climbed beyond anything they could match. They have footage of it, and presumably the radar tracks are stored somewhere.

The fact that it hasn’t really been investigated is frustrating. This is a lot more evidence than most cases.

Thanks for the link man!

I’m diving in now …

There are more detailed accounts elsewhere, but the fact that the NY Times wrote about it gave it a bit more respectability than most UFO reports.

What the hell …

Under Mr. Bigelow’s direction, the company modified buildings in Las Vegas for the storage of metal alloys and other materials that Mr. Elizondo and program contractors said had been recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena.

By 2009, Mr. Reid decided that the program had made such extraordinary discoveries that he argued for heightened security to protect it. “Much progress has been made with the identification of several highly sensitive, unconventional aerospace-related findings,” Mr. Reid said in a letter to William Lynn III, a deputy defense secretary at the time, requesting that it be designated a “restricted special access program” limited to a few listed officials.

A 2009 Pentagon briefing summary of the program prepared by its director at the time asserted that “what was considered science fiction is now science fact,” and that the United States was incapable of defending itself against some of the technologies discovered. Mr. Reid’s request for the special designation was denied.

That’s some pretty serious stuff. I’m not sure how I had missed the NYT article mentioned. I blame this non-stop political news cycle.

The wrinkle behind this whole story is Tom Delonge, of Blink 182. He’s the money behind this disclosure. He also believes some pretty crazy shit. He did an interview with Joe Rogan where I believe he was high before they started and he went into this stuff, and into some crazy shit too.

In the Wikileaks dump from Assange/Russia there is an email thread between Tom Delonge and John Podesta about hooking Delonge up with some DoD guys that will help his “project”. The project being UFO disclosure.

These videos from the Navy and the NYT article are the results of that and Delonge’s effort. The “alloys” are a mystery, they’re supposedly debris from a UFO. We know Bigelow still has them, and Delonge’s team is doing Science at them. They keep promising a demo of something related to the alloys soon, so far it’s been a lot of hype and not much payoff around those. They might just be nothing.

I think Delonge and Rogan smoked something before they started the podcast. Rogan does that a lot. This aired months before the release of those videos and the NYT article. It might explain why Delonge is so cagey, but he might also be talking out his ass.

There’s a slight bit of misrepresentation when this news came out; there were frequent interviews with a Navy pilot that was shoehorned in with this footage, despite the fact that the two incidents were actually separate (the pilot was not involved in the incident in the footage).

In an interesting side note, the pilot that was interviewed is no random schlub. He was the squadron commander featured in the PBS series Carrier; if you’ve seen it you may have remembered a sequence where the pilots had to continually land in worsening pitching deck conditions. He’s the guy who took over a refueling tanker flight from a more inexperienced pilot and was the last to land.

I didn’t know that, that’s cool. It makes sense, if you’re scrambling fighters to intercept a friggin UFO you probably send the squadron commander.

Why does everyone jump to extraterrestrial when they hear UFO, that isn’t the only definition or initial definition of the term.

Yea I wish aliens were visiting or had crash landed here, but they haven’t and it’s pure fantasy.

Because people these days don’t know that it means Unidentified Flying Object. They are used to it meaning aliens because movies and TV shows. Just ignorance.

Vaguely relevant but this is an excellent book which treats the subject seriously. It has no conclusions but offers many thought provoking arguments. Well worth a read.

TL;DR

Someone just tell me the 75.

Kinda tough to summarize, but I can give you the contents list. Each one is well thought out. The 75th one’s title is misleading. its the authors view and does not resolve the paradox as he notes, despite the title. If you care he goes for the Humanity is lucky and probably alone argument. The other arguments I found much more interesting, the exciting thing is… nobody knows. Which is cool.

The light cage limit is one of my faves, which talks about exponential uncontrolled population increases and how they hit the speed of light limit and cant physically fit any more into the space they have available. Great book.

According to the interview he gave over at Rationally Speaking podcast, basically he thinks that there are lots of tiny gates that end up cumulatively being a much lower probability than the Drake equation typically gives, and with more gates.

So, 1:10,000 chance of having a habital world, times 1:10,000 chance of a habital world developing life, time 1:10,000 of habital world that develops life develops intelligent life, ect. Tack on 10 or so of those together and you get a very small number very very quickly, even with billions of potential planets in the galaxy.

Julia Galef (the host) has pointed out that about the same time his book was published some younger researchers took the Drake equation and looked at it through Bayesian statistics and came up with the same conclusion that he espoused independently. OTOH, in the book itself he didn’t necessarily espouse a conclusion.

Interestingly to this conversation he has also seen a UFO, which he doesn’t believe to be an extraterrestrial.

So if we find biological activity, no matter how small, on Enceladus or Europa, what does that do to alter Fermi Paradox or Drake equation? To me, it would mean the pessimist formulaics are probably wrong since they’ve skewed down biological activity and the chance of civ so low. I think they rated advanced biology was 1 per galaxy?
