It was clear on the show that wigs were part of the uniform. You also got to see Gabrielle Drake there (Nick Drake’s sister) change out of her uniform. It was a fine show, though it was no Captain Scarlet vs. the Mysterons.

UFO was the best 20th century SF TV series, though with a sadly insufficient effects budget.
I don’t think they ever officially justified the wigs, but they were certainly cool-looking. Let us (waves hands) say they’re anti-static. UFO was also noteworthy for being the first SF series that I’m aware of to have a) a significant number of non-token black actors*, and b) to feature male sex objectification to go with female. Apparently both were due to Sylvia Anderson’s influence over the series.
*Star Trek TOS did well to have Uhura, but I think she was the only regular cast member to be black.
It was a great show, really.
And had some great toys, too.

I sometimes wonder why we think aliens are running around. I’ve see those videos and those navy pilots are very good. But please. Just no.
I still have mine complete with firing missile/torpedo…I always wanted one of the mobiles but alas was never given one…
As a kid living in Germany (my father was a career US Army officer, and thus we moved around a bit!) I had access to toys from places like the UK, where companies like Corgi and Dinky made some great diecast models. My fave probably was this one, which had a steel bomb that both actually dropped and had a space for a cap so that it would make a “bang!” when it hit!
Note that I got this on a trip to England, as AFAIK toys like this were not exactly welcome in 1960s era Germany. Too soon, or something…
Wow I have a very similar Stuka but the tail is higher and the wing inversion a bit different. Also a great Zero, Mustang & ME110 in the same line. Still have them too. Oh and the Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle from Captain Scarlett. My bro had Lady Penelope’s pink roller with Parker which was awesome.
