Upgrade Path

I’m planning on upgrading my rig over the next 5 months and at the end I want to have a rig capable of running games at their max detail level at 1600x1200 at about 40 fps for the next 2.5 years. My first upgrades will be the optical drives - LiteOn 48x24x48.The two core issues are CPU & video (of course!). I’d like to go with a 2.8 Ghz P4(400 FSB) and a P4X400 and overclock it to about 3.7 Ghz (100-133 FSB). My AMD option will be a Barton and KT400. The video card will be the last thing on my list and I will be buying one around Jan-Feb. The options on the shelves will be NV30 and R300 @ .13 micron. What should I set my sites on?

There is no 2.8GHz P4 with a 400MHz FSB; 533FSB only. The
last two 400MHz FSB Pentium 4’s will be the recently released
2.5GHz and 2.6GHz CPUs.

If you go with P4, and you want to avoid RAMBUS memory,
then you might consider waiting until early next year, when
dual-channel DDR systems for P4 will be available.

If you wait a month or so, Nforce2 dual-channel DDR for
AMD systems will be out, too.

As ever,
