While I’m pleased as punch that even his base is turning on him (or, would be if not for the fact that so many people have to be harmed for that to happen), I’m also prepared for the inevitable disappointment as the 30 second goldfish memory span of the American public kicks in when this ends. “Sure, the government shut down, but he fixed it! What a great negotiator!”

Uh, what compromise? AFAIK all we have is something the President has discussed with VP Pence and a couple of other Republicans. I’m not seeing how that’s a compromise…

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was the lone Democrat to vote against a short-term bill to reopen the federal government on Wednesday because of concerns over the bill’s funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This is tea party type stuff.

If she wants to get rid of ICE, this is not the way to do it.

Yup. Mitch is a complete joke. I did love the irony of ‘enough political spite’ from that waste of flesh.

Agreed. Now it was inconsequential in his case, as a lone defector won’t move the needle, but we rightly pillory the GOP for shutdown shenanigans.

Exactly, you don’t say you want to shut everything down just because you don’t like one thing.

That’s basically what Trump is doing.

There is some chance that she knew that her vote would make a larger point without ruining everything for everyone.

I’d say it approaches 100%.

This is the moment Timex has been warning us about. It’s true. It’s all true.

Thank you.

Trump’s long sought war and ‘distraction’ may be on the horizon…

What is it Barry Goldwater said,

" that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!

Of course, but then it’s just a stupid show vote.

And really, what the Democrats need to be “showing” now is absolute unity.

My guess is that she disagrees. My other guess is that she believes that the ICE issue is more important than you do. But I hope to find a place where she explains her vote. I don’t bother with Twitter but I like it when you lot post tweets! I suspect she tweeted her reasons.

It’s in the piece:

and the real reason:

I’m sure she does. But no matter how important she finds that one issue, it’s not really a justification for shutting down the government.

That’s what this is all about.

Her stated reason was that she doesn’t believe that we should fund ICE.

This is exactly the kind of crap that the tea party pulled, saying that they wouldn’t pass the budget because it included funding for stuff they didn’t like, like planned Parenthood.

The fact that her vote didn’t affect the end result doesn’t really change the fact that the underlying idea of saying you don’t want to fund the government because it funds one thing you don’t like, is wrong.

EDIT:
Actually, no, i take that back. It’s not necessarily wrong. But you need to be able to compromise. Any budget is going to contain some things you don’t like.

I’m cool with representatives voting their conscience and voting on behalf of their constituents, despite the grander strategic agenda. But I see why someone would disagree.

I doubt she’s leading the way down some slippery slope. Hope I’m right…

I also agree that i don’t think she would necessarilly do this when it really mattered.

But i still think it’s a dumb move.

Yeah, that’s where I stand on it. And these days I agree with her position for the most part. ICE is just a clusterfuck in every possible way, they need to fold it into Homeland Security or the like and fire all the leadership that let it get this bad.
