USB 2.0 Root Hub Device driver install causes system freeze

I bought a new machine a few weeks ago. The specs are:
Intel 3.2 duo core
4 gig RAM
500 gig HD

Everything is generally working great. This is probably the easiest time I’ve ever had putting a machine together. I installed XP on it. Installation went smooth until it tried to install the USB 2.0 Root Hub Device driver. It hung hard. I’ve tried several more times to install and every time it hangs hard.
I’ve updated XP to SP3. I’ve updated every other driver I have. I have searched the net to the best of my meager abilities and haven’t found an answer. Does anyone have any idea?

does it install with a slipstreamed sp3 cd?
