I searched but didn’t see a thread on this one.

Coming June 25 for $15 (I think I heard $15). Anyway it looks beautiful but from the trailer it seems to be kinda adventure gamey? Anyone know for sure?

First time I’ve heard of it. The trailer looks more like a side-scroller, like castle crasher?

.

Sounds like it should be a JRPG. Either way, pass.

It was in the Ubi E3 presentation of last year briefly for a few seconds.
But yes it’s pretty unclear what it is to me as well.

Meet unexpected heroes in a world torn apart in Valiant Hearts – The Great War, a 2D animated comic adventure video game from Ubisoft Montpellier. Move into action Emile, Karl, Freddie, Anna, and their faithful canine companion Walt, and solve puzzles or sneak through enemy lines!

RPS to the rescue:

Turns out they covered it a bit after E3:

And that’s why I give them money via my “subscription” every month via Paypal… :)

There is a new E3 trailer out for this. Absolutely horrible, in all the right ways.

Wow, this could be amazing.

I’m just not sure about this, and I think it’s a good example of why I am suspicious of the notion that video games aren’t art. These videos leave me convinced that I could watch an animated film about World War I - mature animated films might be a relatively new thing in the West, but the Japanese have been doing this for years - but a game, I’m not sure. If the gameplay is all “pull levers to get to the next stage”, I’ll be disappointed. In fact, I’ll be disappointed regardless of what the game has you do, because there’s nothing in the way of game mechanics that could be serious enough to match the setting.

Seconded.

I sure hope it turns out well. I hope the writing is top notch.

Is there any “writing,” per se? The impression I got from earlier trailers is that there’s no spoken words in the game itself. Do you think the letter-reading will be part of the game, or was that just for the trailer? Either way, really spectacularly well done, if you ask me.

The voice in that trailer is really really familiar. Any one place the actor?

The art style and setting were enough to earn a preorder on Steam from me. We need more games set in WWI.

Nevermind. This guy did the previous trailer and sounds like him again. Familiar from gajillion advertisements. He does an especially great job in that latest trailer. Just the way he says “valiant hearts.”

Not to get all touchy-feely-high-horsey, but I can’t help but wonder what someone in the trenches would think to hear this. FWIW, I agree with you, and thought the trailer was great.

Really, I’d like to see more of, well, everything set in WWI. It’s a period and a setting that fascinates me greatly, but it seems sadly underrepresented in just about every medium.

And it’s truly the turning point of the 20th century. Everyone wants to game the Hitler scenario, but if the Great War and its aftermath play out differently-- no Nazi rise to power, no Lenin in Russia, no politically arbitrary borders in the Middle East, no interventionist US…

Have we actually seen any game play yet? Lots of nice music and beautiful art but just what kind of game is it anyways?

Puzzle platformer type thing I think, the RPS articles up-thread elaborate a little.

Instead you have a long-running insurgency in much of eastern Europe and occupied Russia against the expanded German Empire, which also props up an Austro-Hungarian Empire being torn apart by revolutionary groups throughout its domain. Radicalism takes hold in France and the UK as well after they suffer from hyperinflation while being forced to pay war reparations to the Central Powers. The decaying Ottoman government is unable to stop bloody regional conflicts within its borders, leading to… well, you get the idea.

Not disagreeing that it’s a turning point, of course. I might say that WWII was as much of a turning point as WWI, it just happened later. But that’s neither here nor there–I do agree there should be more set in WWI.

I always thought WW1 would lend itself to a Medal of Honor type game. You have several fronts to play, sub warfare, aerial warfare, trench warfare.
