VASSAL Engine. BattleLore and more

I just played my first game of BattleLore on the VASSAL Engine.
Wow, what a brilliant system that is! I know I’m very late to the party on this, but I figured there might be more of you that hadn’t tried this yet.

As life comes up with ever increasing demands, I usually find myself having less and less interest in and time for halfbaked online adaptions of boardgames, but this really is both simple and elegant. The only bummer is that it looks like there are too few BattleLore opponents to reliably find a game fast enough.

From their frontpage:
VASSAL is a game engine for building and playing online adaptations of board games and card games. It allows users to play in real time over a live Internet connection (in addition to playing by email). It runs on all platforms, and is free for personal use.

The list of games is impressive, although I have no idea if all games are as well done as BattleLore, or how many players there are for each game.

If you like boardgames, head on over to the VASSAL Engine and see for yourself.

It’s a shame they don’t have any decent Games Workshop implementations. The Battlefleet Gothic one is probably the best…

Sten I’m up for a game of battlelore sometime if you like; I only played a few times over vassal, but they were pretty fun experiences.

PM me if you are interested in setting up a time to play…

Battlelore is an awesome game and its fun to play it on Vassal, but playing in person is way better! I played a couple of games last weekend and have another session lined up for this Friday night, if at all possible try to find someone in your area to play with.

BTW, Days of Wonder releasing a expansion (Call to Arms) for BL sometime this month or next IIRC, it includes a card driven army deployment system, Specialist cards and some new terrain tiles and tokens. Tom Vasel gave it a wonderful review on BGG

Hopefully it will be released by Fathers Day, wink wink family!!!

The expansion is out. I picked it up last Saturday.

Terrific! Now I… err I mean my kids can buy my Fathers Day present.

they have BFG? I’ve been wanting to play that game for ages but no one ever wanted to collect miniature space ships to play against me.

Kalle: It’s not on the webiste, but some bright spark from the BFG mailing list created a VASSAL version. I’ll see if I can dig up the links (I stayed subscribed to the list)

Edit: Oh, I’m wrong, it is there after all

Just popping in here to say that I’ve just begun a battle for the ages with Bruce Geryk using VASSAL’s mod of Twilight Struggle. Bruce says it’s a great translation of the game, and a really attractive board/card set. He knows more about this stuff than I do, so I’ll take his word for it.

Great game.

(We’ll be documenting our fight for control of the world on my blog if people have any interest in reading boardgame reports.)

I mean, unlike the typical Tom vs Bruce stuff.
