VPN / Dedicated server

Well, scratch purevpn off the list of VPN service providers to consider, if that’s the method they use for advertising. Apparently their fine print indicates they keep and cough up logs on demand anyway.

I use proxy.sh. Its like $3 a month with an annual membership.

Ahem…

For all others, the heaven is still safe for you, dear ones. We will completely remove Wireshark after 7 days and restart the node so that everything is erased (RAM-switch). All other nodes are left unaffected by these actions,”

Heh. The broken english is super reassuring.

Yeah I was aware of that. For what I do on the internet, I am very comfortable with using their service.

This seems to be the only recent VPN-related thread, so this seemed like the place to say that the VPN service I use is running a Black Friday sale. ibVPN is doing 69% off all their yearly plans. They gave me a referral link to share. I’m going to re-up my subscription while the sale price is on, figured I’d share in case anyone else is looking.

I’m pretty happy with the ibVPN service, been using it for several years now. My setup has a Linux box always connected to their servers running a proxy, and I run all my privacy-conscious traffic through that proxy. They’ve also got a fairly user-friendly Windows app, if you don’t want to go through the extra work of a central proxy.

Today our Republican government sided with ISP’s over user’s privacy. ISPs will soon be able to sell our browsing history.

So, any updated info to this thread on a good VPN? Kind of lost, but looking at this one: https://www.goldenfrog.com/vyprvpn

Thoughts?

I’ve been using PIA for years now. It’s terrific, fast, and only $40 a year.: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/

PIA is one of the VPNs that the Wirecutter seems to like. Going to have to sit down and figure this stuff out. Not sure how being a heavy Mac user changes things.

I wouldn’t care as much if it meant much cheaper internet. Sort to like how Google works, we know they are selling our crap or using it to place ads, but it’s free so we don’t mind. But now Comcast can profit off of me as well…argh, I am really mad about this. I guess I should check R&P if I want to complain…

Can’t imagine it making any difference what operating system you use. It’s encrypted at the network level…they all work the same way.

From what I have seen, quality of apps/interfaces with the OS can be different. There are Mac/iOS only VPNs out there I found out today for instance.

I use PIA myself and am satisfied with the service. Share my account with my whole family.

Maybe they should be reading this thread for VPN recommendations!

I’ve been using PIA but for some reason my bank doesn’t like it. Do some sites block known VPN IP addresses for security reasons? Maybe that’s a good thing when it comes to bank accounts.

Yes, some sites will block connections from known VPN IPs. Netflix certainly won’t work either.

Good roundup here: https://privacytoolsio.github.io/privacytools.io/

Yeah. Steam didn’t work when I used PIA and picked an NYC server, but when I picked ‘East Coast’ it didn’t balk.

Huh. So, having been blocked for a while, Netflix is now working again via Tunnelbear. Same too for Comedy Central, though the block only lasted a week for the latter. Recent Comedy Bang Bang episodes here I come!

So it looks like I’m going to go with PIA. Any recent issues I should know about before I sign up?

No, and here’s a deal, 2 years for $51 with code PIA15.

You can definitely find cheaper VPNs. Some offer lifetime memberships for as low as $29. But I want to pay regularly, because a lifetime subscriber is a liability and there’s no incentive to maintain quality service.
