Some cinema examples where the VR aspect has been thought through?
The rumour claims ‘Rift-S’ will be a bit of an update:
The report revealed the headset would be an iterative update, increasing resolution and changing to the same inside-out tracking system as the upcoming Oculus Quest VR console.
Also something about ‘software-based IPD handling’, so no lens slider. And apparently they are running out of Rift stock worldwide:
Rift is no longer available in the United States at Amazon, Best Buy or Microsoft. Newegg removed the listing entirely.
If it’s also natively wireless, I could be in the market for an upgrade… if it’s true. :)

It better be an upgrade!
The Odyssey plus has built in motion tracking with no extra sensors and a higher resolution screen for 300 dollars right now. I expect Oculus to at least match that!
As a minimum, the Oculus will use the better optics and panel than it’s also going to be used in the Quest, so that’s also an upgrade.
Wonder when they will announce it. I think I"m running close to my rift return window if it’s the same price but better.
This mod for Skyrim VR looks very impressive:
Space Channel 5 is coming to VR! Presumably without MJ.

Unveiled during this year’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, the Oculus Rift S is the next iteration of the firm’s PC-powered virtual reality headset and draws on breakthroughs made with the standalone Oculus Quest.
Most notably, the Rift S features Oculus Insight, a series on cameras on the headset itself that enable inside-out tracking for room-scale virtual reality and remove the need to set up external trackers around the user.
In fact, the Rift S features an additional fifth Insight tracker to improve the quality of the tracking and ensure it remains compatible with all software already released for the Rift.
There are more than 1,000 titles on the Rift store at present, and all will be compatible with Rift S. Equally, games released after the launch of Rift S will still be supported by the original Rift.
Rift S also features a new ergonomic shape with a halo strap design, created in partnership with Lenovo. It will have a higher resolution display – 1280 x 1440 per eye, the same as Oculus Go – with a refresh rate of 80hz.
It also features Passthrough+, which builds on the technology found in Oculus Quest that enables players to see their surroundings through the cameras built around the headsets. This can be used to draw ‘Guardian’ lines around their space with the Oculus Touch controllers, so players can ensure their play space is not blocked by any obstacles, such as furniture.
$399 (controllers included)
Excellent, glad I returned my original Rift. Now to play the waiting game.
I’m guessing the difference between 80hz and 90hz won’t be noticable

It’s kind of 2 steps forward, 1 step back. Probably an improvement overall but a little disappointing they dropped the OLED for LCD.
Notably there’s no physical IPD adjustment. This is fine for me because I’m in the middle of the range anyway, but it would make it significantly worse for anyone at the edges.
Very disappointed with such a minor resolution bump. Doesn’t even match the Vive Pro.
And no physical IPD adjustment :(
It’s half the price. Less if you include Vive controllers.

The LCD uses 3 subpixels versus 2 for the OLED, so it should be slightly more impactful than just the resolution difference (similar to how the Playstation VR looks pretty good despite being lower resolution technically).
Overall it’s hard to convince yourself to upgrade. It’s a lot like the Odyssey+ and whatnot.
Well yes, because it’s HTC and they have to charge their HTC tax. That doesn’t mean the higher cost is due to the screen. There are multiple headsets with higher resolutions than the Rift S that are significantly cheaper than the Vive Pro.
Heck, the Samsung HMD is the same rrp as the Rift S and has the same res as the Vive Pro. The new HP headset is higher resolution than the Vive Pro and $200 cheaper.
This is extremely underwhelming after 3 years.

The Quest is same price but has the computer built in, and has higher resolution. I wonder if they are taking a bath on that!
Rift S feels like a 300 dollar product.
Samsung Odyssey + is still $500 and only has 2 cameras (so not nearly as good tracking). The new HP headset is $600 so even with the resolution bump is still $200 more than Rift S with less tracking cameras.
The price does not seem too out of line to me.
It also has a higher refresh rate screen than the quest + and extra camera, for what that’s worth.
