It may not be a matter of resolution. The cameras on tbe Oculus Quest appear to be black and white only. I suspect this improves processing speed, but it would be pretty unsatisfying for AR.
Maybe it’s performance related. What res would you need, and do you also want full colour and high refresh? Because they’d still need to be tracking at the same time as you’re using them for AR and I can’t imagine image/depth processing on two 4k colour cameras is cheap computationally.
Yes, this. :)

Not to mention that the lag between camera and eye is a little bit nausea inducing.
Ack. Tried No Man’s Sky. The interface, which I find a bit unintuitive in non VR, feels especially clunky in VR. Pretty darn beautiful though. I gave up last night after feeling like a manacled a Harry Houdini trying to escape from a barrel going over the Victoria falls. I guess I just have to keep trying until it beds down into my muscle memory.
Thanks for that. Picked up Lone Echo and enjoying it.

Playing it myself now. So far I’m a space-sick janitor :)
So if you were to bite on one (and given your PC is plenty powerful to handle VR regardless…) Rift S? Quest?
I do not want to have to do a lighthouse setup, no matter what.

Rift S. Quest is a standalone toy.

Yeah! While the rift S is a… toy.

Eh they all are but a valve index is no kid’s toy.
If you’re mainly into sit-down games like Elite, DCS, Project Cars, and No Man’s Sky, then consider the Rift.
The Quest is an amazing bit of kit for the more active games. Untethered is a revelation. It’s portable so you can take it anywhere, show it to friends and family much more easily, and even play outside if you’re careful. It can stream most of the Rift games from your PC if you have the Wifi for it and can live with a bit of lag and stutter (I can’t, but I have both).
I’ll second that. I’ve owned both the Rift and the Quest and I’d say that unless you’re already a fan of cockpit sim (drive, fly, space) the Rift won’t turn you into one and that’s really where that hardware shines. For everything else I’d recommend the Quest. Untethered is worth the sacrifice in power. Honestly though unless you’re all-in on VR right now I’d wait a year. The Quest has done really well and I’d bet a more powerful version is on the horizon, even if it’s just an upgraded processor.
I’m not going to be doing anything with a VR headset that involves wandering around the house, much less outside. Good lord.

I never know if you’re a gaping pilot or a pilot of Greek love.
Haha handle comes from the second one but I guess neither of them really make much sense!

This place is near my old house:

I always thought it was a really unfortunate choice of names.

If you have enough of a play area to be able to swing your arms wildly about I recommend GORN!

Don’t assume that the benefits of being untethered mean “wandering around the house” or “playing outside”. We’ve got a Vive, an Index and a Quest. Most of our games are on the Vive/Index (since we’ve had that longer) but I really enjoy playing on the Quest purely for convenience sake. Don’t have to start up Steam VR, turn on lighthouses, and the best part is not having to consciously be aware of a cable wrapping itself around your feet as you turn around in circles (depending on what you’re playing). Also, the Vive/Index are heavier than the Quest, and slightly less comfortable as a result, imo.
We mainly got a Quest because I often use Beat Saber in order to get a daily workout in, and it’s a comfortable headset to wear if I’m going to be moving around a lot (and working up a sweat), plus I can easily go do it in another room if my spouse is trying to get work done in the room where the Vive/Index is hooked up. ;)
It’s all going to depend on what games you’re wanting to play in VR, of course. I found Beat Saber and Space Pirate Trainer to be every bit as high quality on the Quest as they are on the Vive (the sound is surprisingly good). But we haven’t bought a whole load more as yet, though there are a few games I’m interested in.
I’m not at all interested in an Index. As I stated, I’m not doing lighthouses.
