This is sad. I was really hoping for a MS Xbox VR solution with the next iteration. I mean, he isn’t ruling it out, but it really sounds like they aren’t going that direction.

I’m still completely shocked and disgusted that their new MS Flight Simulator 2020 which was supposed to setup the groundwork for the next 10 years didn’t originally plan to handle VR. One presumes the teams both have access to the same data. Here’s hoping their data is wrong.
Could be translation issues from the German source, but seems like Flight Sim team has set their VR priorities to ‘very high’:

They do seem to have changed their priorities because of the response from the flight sim community after the original MS FlightSim 2020 announcement. I’m really surprised that they could have started a flight sim at this point in time and not been thinking about this as a core critical feature. I just hope they don’t end up with a half-assed retrofit because it wasn’t a key feature from the start. It does sound like they are aware this is a risk and they are trying to make sure they do it right.

Looks like they changed their mind.

Yes really. It’s 2019, FlightSims should support VR we’re not back in 2010. VR is just such a huge leap forward for FlightSims, I don’t see how anyone who has ever played one in VR could ever want to go back to playing them on a flat 2D screen. It’s inconceivable.

I usually reserve words like “disgusted” for things of actual consequence in the world but ok

I’m disgusted by Brussels sprouts and filthy casuals.
I’m disgusted by science. Also by people who say that white is a color.
Facebook acquires Beat Saber dev:
The shared experiences of games are profoundly memorable ones, and for millions of people, Beat Saber was their first encounter with immersive VR gaming. Today we’re announcing that Beat Games is joining us in our quest to bring VR to more people...
Probably the most salient points from the link:
What does this mean for the modding community?
We understand and appreciate the value that modding brings to Beat Saber when done so legally and within our policies. We’re going to do our best to preserve the value that mods bring to the Beat Saber player base. As a reminder, our most recent policy updates give more clarity to how developer mode is intended to be used, such as helping developers build their apps or for enthusiasts to explore new concepts. It is not intended for engaging in piracy or illicit modding, including mods that infringe on third-party IP rights or contain malicious code.
Are you going to be slowing down updates for non-Oculus platforms and prioritizing development for Oculus?
No, Beat Games will continue to ship content and updates for Beat Saber at the same time across all currently supported platforms.
With Quake 2 Quest public beta now released on Sidequest, in the unlikely event that anyone doesn’t have the full game to copy across you can pick it up for a buck fifty:
Same goes for the original Quake and Half Life, which also have Quest versions:
Brussels sprouts are amazing unless you are a filthy casual.
I bought The Under the other day and played about an hour of it. Like Virtual Virtual Reality (also by the same devs), it is one of those games that can show how mind-blowing VR can be. Its also quite weird, but in a delightful way. Looks like it might be one of the best VR games released this year (especially for Quest).
I also played some Espire 1, but did not enjoy it as much as I expected. Don’t get me wrong, its a really cool concept and it does the MGS-style stealth well. But its one of those games that feels more like a conversion of a traditional genre to VR instead of something that takes full advantage of VR (like The Under). In other words, it feels like I’ve played this game countless times already on other consoles, and don’t feel the need to play it again in VR. Also, the game is quite buggy, and could use a few patches.
Translation: we’re shutting down Beat Saver.
Yeah, the recent Oculus policy update makes more sense in the light of this acquisition. I think it’s inevitable they’ll try curtail the rampant music piracy present in the modding scene.
It’d be great if they could integrate with a streaming service or something.
The solution is to divide the mods in two parts, the audio file (provided by the user, totally a legal copy) and the map file. Make the user be the one who has to own the mp3, and the legal issues are solved.

I’m not so sure how possible that is. There’s a lot of timing issues in that as a lot of mappers will push several seconds of silence at the beginning of the audio track so there’s a warmup period (unless something has changed in the last 4 months or so since i played BS)
I’m not sure if this should go in the VR thread or the “What could go wrong?” thread, but it’s probably better in an “our dystopian future” thread.

Bovine excrement. Cows don’t look ahead like we do, they look to their sides. Cow VR should look more like horse blinders. So I’m calling BS.
