Or you can enjoy it outside of campaign without caring too much about getting high scores
Sure, but I do really like score chasing. Adding friends to a leaderboard and iterating on a song/thing and seeing yourself go up the board is satisfying. But when the scoring mechanic is this dumb, ugh. It kind of ruins it for me.
Maybe at some point I’ll go back with a different attitude. I appreciate the grounding.

The campaign is hit and miss. Some of the levels have really frustrating objectives that ask you to play the game badly, like “don’t move too much”.
You can definitely just skip right into Solo if you’d like.
I like playing campaign but do wish I could turn that particular objective off!

I haven’t touched the campaign since I beat it 7 months ago, and I play Beat Saber a couple of hours a week still. You can safely ignore the campaign. Some of its requirements are kind of ridiculous. I mostly chase scores. Right now I’m just trying to keep my global leaderboard position below 1000 on all the Expert charts.
Yes and no. Most of the score (100 points per block for 60° before and 40° after passing through the block) has to do with the total angle of the swing, and there’s another 15 bonus points for how evenly you divide the block in 2. (Ratio of the volume of the 2 pieces*15) BUT, you do not need to swing your arms like crazy to get decent scores. I routinely score S or SS on Expert tracks and I mostly only move my wrists and forearms–I couldn’t possibly even hit the blocks at speed if I swung my arms completely. If you’re swinging far enough to risk shoulder injury, that’s too much. Watch this video and you’ll see she usually keeps her upper arms tucked close to her torso and 95% of the saber motion comes from her forearms and wrists.
An advanced technique I’ve just started using recently is to hold the controllers palm up. It really helps minimize your arm movement when you have to swing the saber side to side.
This objective is actually really good at forcing you to use better technique. You do not need to swing wildly. (Though I sometimes do because I like to dance/flow while playing.)
Honestly at the risk of ruining my stellar reputation (/s) I like to embellish and flourish and dance when I get in the flow. But apparently that is bad for score because to get a good score I need to focus on a particular way of slicing the blocks, which is a real bummer. I want to play in my favorite way and score based on accuracy of block attack but that basically doesn’t matter at all if you aren’t hitting the blocks in the way they have decided is the right way. It’s a real bummer, but I could totally see how someone else might love it, if that’s the way they like to play.

Anyone caught battle dancing will be arrested and sent to jail!
I think you guys should post video.

There are definitely songs where I ignore score and go crazy with dancing: Overkill, Pop/Stars, Greatest Showman, etc. You can turn off failure in the options and the game will still track your score and put you on leaderboards, just with a big score modifier and a notation.
Also, if you’re on the Quest, custom tracks don’t have leaderboards, so score is kind of irrelevant anyway. You can just play for fun:)

Also, if you guys want to be leaderboard friends on Quest, that would be cool. My Quest moniker is “Matt_W”
When I “dance like no one’s watching” I would prefer if no one was actually watching. :D
I got stuck on the opposite: move 650mts or fail!

Half + Half seems to be a online experience that flopped, but now they have made it free. Get it here for Quest, it’s also free for Rift.
Quest goes on with their daily deals, today is SairentoVR.
New story in Oculus TV
New home on the Quest for Xmas
Espire 1 had a meaty update to improve graphics and AI, I guess I will eventually buy it.
Pistol Whip had an update with a new level.
An amusing Oculus blog entry, in how they had to update their system to deal with christmas lights
Also, newer Quest games will have the option of using a more dynamic foveated rendering (basically it will increase or decrease as the game performs better or worse).
Haha, certainly a timely update to address what may be an issue for many people in the coming days as they open their shiny new Quests! :D

Fanatical offers the Star Trek game for Rift/Quest for $11. See here https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/ee86r8/star_trek_bridge_crew_only_1143_get_it_while_it/
Also, today’s deal in the Quest store is Moss.
I have a quick VR etiquette question. There is a moderate-sized family event tonight consisting of about 7-10 people where we will be playing some light boardgames, and I am wondering whether to bring the Quest. Any thoughts? I worry about having an item that really only one person can be using, even if others are streaming. I only really have showed the quest to one person at a time before, never a group. Everyone loves it but I don’t know if it’s a bad idea to bring to groups. Does anyone have thoughts?

I would think it’d be fine if most people are playing board games, with a couple people alternating with the Quest. It’s probably not something that each person could handle more than a few moments anyways, if they haven’t messed with VR before.
Bring it along! I can’t imagine much downside.
