ohhh…that sounds interesting! I am going to wait a few months, and then see - prices are probably just going to get better and better. Thanks!
Good stuff, we should see a lot more content, even if it’s not curated!
Though I guess the concern is that this will allow them to try and remove Sidequest, which would still have its uses for those… less savoury applications, that don’t necessarily want to abide by the Oculus platform and content policies that will apply to this new method.
The question is whether they remove sideloading entirely, which would largely impact piracy and porno.
I don’t think they are changing that. Very possibly it will mean Sidequest will be a Quest app that is easier to install, in fact. I think it’s still sideloading, that’s the method that Sidequest utilizes. Just with a layer of polish and ease of use.
They are not controlling or curating anything, so porno should be able to also make their own apps…
Yeah that’s what I said. :)
No, it definitely isn’t sideloading, Oculus is hosting those apps and they’re covered by their content restrictions, meaning no porno. And obviously no piracy.
“The Oculus Platform policies will apply to all apps we distribute, and developers will still need to meet the obligations of our Oculus Content Policy. However, apps distributed through this new channel won’t be held to the same technical standards as official Oculus Store apps.”
Oh you are right. It sounds like an ‘indie channel’ of distribution.

It’s basically a second channel in the Oculus store without any quality gates, as far as I can tell, and everything will be allowed that doesn’t violate their TOS. So no porn, piracy, hate speech, etc. You can use it to distribute beta versions to testers and such.
This should basically kill Sidequest, it’s an arrow aimed at their heart, which is ironic since the Sidequest developer has bowed over backwards to ingratiate himself with Oculus to such an extent that he doesn’t allow it to sideload apps anymore.

I have a quick question for anyone here about the Quest.
I picked one up for myself and my daughter. She’s a little tech geek so she loves it, even the bad games. I am excited for the tech but really don’t love the Quest. And, I don’t have a decent game computer right now.
But, I thought about buying a new gaming computer partially so I could get Oculus link and play Rift games on the Quest. Is that worth it at all? Again, I’m not all in on VR yet but thought expanding our gaming choices with the Quest to play Rift games might make having the Quest more worth the money. Plus, of course, new gaming computer for me!
Sure, quest link works great. Do it.
No doubt your game selection will improve, but that selection wouldn’t justify buying an entire gaming computer for it if you aren’t thrilled with what you have now. My opinion of course.

Thanks! I think I am trying to justify the Quest to myself so having a larger game selection will help that out. And, peer pressure from a 12 year old is hard to resist.

You’re basically opening up your Quest to all the Oculus store games for the the Rift plus all the Steam VR games. Tons of stuff out there for a 12yo that even loves the bad games! Various bundle sites also have rotating VR bundles that would be great as well. Keep an eye on something like this for the VR ones:
I really like the Quest plus Virtual Desktop app on the Quest. Allows the Quest to be wireless in Quest mode AND when being used with a PC. There are some specific requirements for the best experience - good 5Ghz wifi router, ethernet to the PC, sideloading the client for SteamVR games. With those in place it’s indistinguishable from wired mode in my experience.
Having a fully wireless experience for VR is next level from the current crop of PC headsets.
What is it that you don’t like?
I recall this recently got support for streaming Oculus games natively. I’ll have to try it again, because going through Revive was a killer!

I guess I was a little disappointed that the games seemed so short. Arizona Sunshine gets good ratings yet the game takes 4-5 hours. The climb 3 hours, something like that. I was hoping for PC like gaming time on some of the games. I should have really studied VR more before getting into it I guess. But, I did order a new computer a few hours ago so will try the PC link and see what else is out there for the Rift and Steam VR.

I have played hundreds of hours of Beat Saber.
There aren’t any narrative based VR games that approach the length of a non-VR game, with the possible exceptions of Half-life:Alyx and Asgard’s Wrath. The economics of VR just don’t support AAA-quality game development in VR; there isn’t enough of a user base, development is difficult and expensive, and graphical fidelity isn’t as good in VR, even with a high-quality rig. Certainly on the Quest, as a standalone device, expect 3-4 hours for a narrative game. Your best bang-for-buck is in replayable score-based games like Beat Saber or Pistol Whip.
Yeah absolutely fair criticism, and Arizona is probably one of the longer ones… ;)
It’s a thing that many of the VR-specific PC games share too, outside of the bigger titles like Asgard’s Wrath and HL: Alyx.
But then you have Elite Dangerous and No Man’s Sky, which can consume a lifetime.
Yep!
