I played Skyrim VR a fair bit on PSVR. The combat (melee) was kinda meh. Bows and spells were fun in VR. Each dungeon though felt extra cool and I really liked the experience. My short take of playing it over a period of time:
- Wow, looking around the world is soooo cool!
- That dragon and headsman scene were intense!
- Holy crap that deer is huge!
- The trees and plants are amazing
- Wait, no, I wanted to move over ther-…uh no…ugh! (move controllers on PSVR)
- Ugh, no! How do I just get up to that spot on my upgrade tree!?!?
- Boy these are really old textures
- That dripping is behind me and that hanging moss is amazing! Whoa this is like Indiana Jones on the Holodeck!
- (Not playing the game) Man, I can’t wait to go into any ol’ random dungeon later today…
Basically I had an inverted Chick-Parabola. It was amazing out of the gate, got frustrating and meh as I tried to play it without a mouse, then got amazing again. For reference, I tried to get into NMS VR on PSVR too and it didn’t hold me. It doesn’t look very good and the dungeon elements of Skyrim really kicked the experience up a notch. Everything from cave drips as you move to trap dodging to flinging lightening with my hands Emperor Palpatine style just all came together. For me, it was very worth the ride.

I’m finally taking the step to a big boys VR headset. I pre-ordered my HP Reverb G2.
I’ve been able to putz around with tools to make my Occulus Go work with Steam games, believe it or not. It’s convoluted and no real means of control (sans a normal controller,) but it did allow me to enjoy a few titles. What held me back though was enough hardware specs on my gaming laptop to drive a real rig. I addressed that a couple of months back but had been waiting for the game to push me forward to getting a headset. the new Microsoft Flight Simulator is that game. Here’s hoping things work well.
I was excited to order a G2 or something similar once I bought a new 3xxx video card later this year. Instead I just completed an order for a Quest. It seems like the most “future proof” option because I can always let my kids play with it full time.
I plan to focus on exercise games for now. The recent ADD thread and linked YouTube channel made me realize the best way for me to maintain a consistent exercise routine is to change what I’m doing every few months, heh. This should slot right into my rotation.
I have a few games in mind already – Thrill of the Fight, Pistol Whip, and Ninja Legends. The challenge for me is listening to music with headphones for an extended period of time tends to irritate some ear issues I have, so I’d probably pass on a lot of the popular rhythm games. I don’t think Beat Saber is a good idea, though my kids love music so I’m sure I’ll get it anyway.
Well, the Quest by default don’t have headphones but integrated speakers so that shouldn’t be a problem?
Yes, I’m eager to see if that’s the case. Sometimes it’s music in general. Long story.

I bought a nice new screaming computer just so we could do the PC link with the 2 new quests I bought for my daughter and me. We both play Alyx and enjoyed it but tried some others and there were lots of connection issues and crashes so we gave up the PC link and just do quest stanalone…and love it.
Beat Saber is great. Pistol Whip is good. AZ Sunshine is OK. I have been “exercising” with Thrill of the Fight and it’s a great burn. I started playing Onward. Yes, the graphics are pretty bad but having fun trying different guns and playing around against the AI. Scared to log into a match with real players but figure will do that occasionally. Echo VR is also fun playing matches online in zero G. The kid loves that .
The Quest has totally been worth it for both of us. Figure they will keep porting or making more games for it and happy with it even with the lower graphic quality compared to the PC games.
But there’s possibly a new model coming for Christmas!
In Death is fantastic, just as great as the Rift version (or more so thanks to wireless freedom). It’s the premiere VR archery experience, rogue-lite style with a Dark Souls aesthetic.
No worries at all. I don’t mind shipping it right back out on eBay. More likely I’d step up to an expensive PCVR headset.

I am behind the times on PC options. I have PSVR, but with Star Wars Squadrons (and HOTAS) I am tempted to go for a higher resolution option and get PC based VR. I used the Quest before when a wing of the family got one for Christmas. It didn’t really click for me. The forward weight of the facemask and the default sound option left me flat. It was prettier than PSVR, but I didn’t at all feel the need to get one as I actually preferred Beat Saber (the only 1 to 1 experience I had to compare) on PSVR. Do I then look at the Rift S? Is Vive a solid product? It feels like the PC market for VR is sort of splintered.

The Rift S is fine and it’s $400, the Index is the best but it costs 2.5x as much.
$600 dollar Reverb G2 comes out next month with a vastly better display than anything else. That’s probably the ideal HOTAS VR set since its primary weakness is controller tracking. It is possible to use the Valve Index controllers with it, but it’s an expensive upgrade. There are reviews on YouTube right now and they are stunning. The direct comparison of the video quality in the headset against every other VR option now will blow you away.
There’s likely a Quest revision this fall, though it might be spring instead. Quest 1.5 may be more of a sidegrade BUT it will be lighter for sure, that’s one confirmed bit since they are going to one screen instead of 2. IMO the Quest is SO close to being the perfect all around headset, if they fix the comfort and bump the specs just a bit (for lower latency high quality video) it could replace the Rift S entirely. The video decoder on the current Quest is what’s really capping the quality.
It’s still hard to beat the current value of the Quest since it’s comparable to a CV1 on the PC, but wireless with Virtual Desktop, and also works totally by itself. But I totally agree on the comfort. I had to mod the heck of mine, installing a pad and counterweight, and it’s still not ideal.
My recommendation is to either wait for G2 or Quest 1.5, or buy one of the cheap VR options like the Quest or Rift S if you want something right now. I would not get a regular Vive (it’s very old now) but if they are still selling Vive Pros that’s a decent cheap option too. The market is splintered there’s no obvious choice right now, except that the Index is probably the best for PC VR is money is no object. Even then the Index is $1000 dollars, people spend that on TVs and video cards all the time so…

G2 all the way for me. But I’m the kind of nerd who has spend 800€ on the pieces of the HOTAS and built a simpit beneath the guest bed. I did get controllers with it, but I don’t think I’ll be shooting zombies much with them.
By the way, @TimJames, I heartly recommend to ‘mod’ the Quest in this way:
a battery in the back improve the comfort so much, even if you are adding weight, as it presses less on your face. That’s mine, there are five velcro straps in there:
-Three with one sided-glue strip, one the battery itself, another on the back part of the quest that is ‘velcroed’ to the mentioned in the battery, and the final one is the white one you side on the other side.
-The final two straps are the thinner ones on the vertical axis, they are two sided velcros and have two full loops, so it sticks both to the white strap and to itself (as the second loop is put on top of the previous one, and the two sides have the appropriate velcro)
I wish they took the G2 a bit further than just resolution and improved the FoV too. I think it’s pretty close to the Rift and Vives, when it should be more like the Index.
It’s also several hundred dollars cheaper than the Index.
What is ‘more like the Index’ ?
I saw some field of view tests done on this Youtube channel below.
In practical use G2 is not as bad as I thought, and would be noticeably better than a Rift. Not near the Index though. And I didn’t realise how high the Samsung Odyssey+ is!
Oh I didn’t read right your post, I read it as
I wish they took the G2 a bit further than just resolution and improved FoV

There is no need to use that amount of time.
You install wabbajack, which has a VR modlist for both Skyrim and Fallout 4.
Modlists are compilations of mods that are ensured to work together by the modlist author - Often this involves weeks or months of tinkering, designing and editing the mods to make them work.
The beauty of Wabbajack is that its an installer - that means, you select a download folder, you select a n install folder, and you press install, and it happens. Afterwards you have normally around 10 minutes of setup and you are good to go, most often with hundreds of new mods in your game.
Enjoy!
Lies Beneath is 20% off, cross-buy on Quest and Rift.
I’ve had my eye on this one, has anyone played it?
