Vox Machinae talks of a coming update

Clever stuff, using AI to replace the multiple face cameras their other experiments were using. Seems eye tracking is still really important, I wonder if it will be included in the next Quest?

I am going to pick up from here. I have done a bunch of research now and it is looking like the HP Reverb G2 is going to be my pick even over the Index. The Index has slightly better FoV, better tracking (that requires towers–ew), and better refresh, but the comparison “from the lens” footage just has me really taken aback by the G2. I am coming from PSVR so the biggest impact for me is the crisper, more defined visuals. Being able to read text without strain or see in the distance feels like a good PC compliment to my PSVR option especially when considering my focus will be on Star Wars Squadrons initially.

Am I wrong on this? I don’t have any PC VR experience yet. But I am darn close to just pre-ordering the G2, but I could go with the Index as well. Speaking of which, does one just pre-order from HP directly? Is there any place or reason to pre-order somewhere else?

I enjoyed my first VR experience tonight! I’m using the Quest. I had a huge smile on my face during the demos and even woke up my sleeping wife. Pretty neat looking. For some reason I thought it would be more of an in-your-face experience like 3D movies, but instead they try to make you feel like you’re there.

Unfortunately I bruised my kneecap this morning like an idiot, so all the standing and ducking started to get to me. I also removed my headset to setup YouTube VR and then never got the focus right again. I need to go back to those green circles.

I’m a little concerned they said it should be used by ages 13 and up. My kids are about half that age. Are they going to be able to manage?

My girls are 6 & 8 and have both enjoyed some VR fun. Highly recommend the Job/Vacation Simulator games for kids.

Absolutely!

It doesn’t fit the kids that well (even more front heavy than usual on the small heads) but they love it. Also 6 and 8.

Youngest loves the Bogo virtual pet that comes with Quest, the other is nuts for Richie’s Plank Experience. I bought a decent chunk of wood that the game uses, it gets surprisingly freaky. They love the feeling of real danger.

Have to be careful with play space as it’s easy for them to get carried away and ignore boundaries. Also make sure those controller straps are nice and tight lol…

God damn it. I’m gonna have to go through the rigmarole of uninstalling my Beat Saber mods now aren’t I?

Tried out the new pack. It’s slightly more difficult than standard Expert, but not as difficult as your typical Expert+ song. I’d say it falls right about in the range of popular Expert+ custom tracks, which I find are generally slightly easier on average than the stock tracks.

Super fun to crash blocks to “SHUT UP! SHUT UP WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU!” though

As someone who was pretty disappointed with the Green Day pack, is this one much better? It wasn’t just the selected Green Day songs, but also that the note patterns for those songs were really boring IMO

The Linkin Park ones are better than Green Day (which I agree were a bit boring), but don’t really come close to the sublime Monstercat or Rocket League packs. They’re ok, but the problem with rock songs in general is the repetitive song structure. What they really need is a blues guitar song pack with like Rude Mood and Black Magic Woman and Little Wing, etc on it.

I want a Lindsey Stirling song pack.

Some news about Facebook tightening the screws on Oculus users by forcing Facebook accounts & integration soon. You could see this was coming, but it doesn’t make getting fucked any more pleasant:

HP Reverb G2 looking ever more attractive.

2023 is not that soon (for existing users).

I read this thread occasionally, frozen with indecision on what to get, and was thinking how everyone seems to like their Oculus, so I am just being silly not considering it. Maybe I should get one? I do not want a FB account though, no matter how good the hardware is, so I guess my decision is made. Thanks for posting.

I use Facebook to keep in touch will college buddies but this practice, no. I love the quest but I’m now hoping Sony comes up with a new VR with the PS5.

I guess I can just make a throwaway account and never log into it? I’ll have to start by changing my name on the Oculus account to something random. Just call me Dan Smith.

Can anyone recommend a specific sweatproof cover for the Quest? Amazon is filled with ones that have a few poor reviews that give me pause, like the cover popping loose at the bottom or ones that actually make you sweat more and fog up the lenses because they’re more concerned with not letting any light through. I get that silicone doesn’t breathe either so let me know what you’ve had luck with.

@TimJames I wanted to ask you, did you know that a revision for the Quest is coming in a few weeks? Imo you had bad timing buying yours this month.
